I Will Control My Words
Sunday we're teaching preschoolers about controlling our words through the story of Jacob & Esau. I think that's a lesson that the Lord can teach us something about in any age. But for a second, let's think about the power that words have and what the Bible has to say about them:
Words have the power of life & death (Proverbs 18:21). Words spoken by God bring things into creation (Genesis 1). Words can satisfy the soul (Proverbs 18:20).
As we've been going through the Promise Land series the theme of freedom has come up a lot. A great question that you can ask yourself is "What lies am I believing right now?" and an even trickier follow up question is "Why?" For some of us, it might be lies that took root in the words that someone has spoken to us.
Jacob was sneaky, disguising himself as Esau so that his blind father would be fooled. He lied and got the blessing from his father. When Esau realized what had been taken from him, he was distraught and begged his father to give him a different blessing. He wanted his father to speak good things into his life, too. He wanted to hear his father affirm him. His father didn’t really bless him, and Esau’s hurt grew into hatred towards his brother. Though Isaac did not give Esau a blessing, he did tell Esau these powerful words in verse 40: It says, “But when you decide to break free, you will shake his yoke from your neck.”
Do you see it? It’s a choice: a decision. When we choose to reject negative words or behaviors that have hurt us, not letting them twist us up emotionally, we can live in authority and control. When we reject wrongful words, we are freed from their sting. That’s the power of Scripture, it can come to life and speak to your spirit. God's words can create a new heart in you. Have you been carrying the weight of someone's words? Have they caused you anxiety or to believe any lies?
Let's ask the Lord to give us the power to reject lies and to replace them with His truth so that we can walk in freedom with Him.
