If anyone has snowshoes that we could borrow for a few weeks at the elementary we would really appreciate it!!! Snowshoeing is such fun exercise and we certainly have the right amount of snow for their use!! Thank you for considering!

Shadow a Student Day
The Shadow a Student Challenge is a fun, illuminating, and supportive journey where school leaders come together to empathize with their students and take new kinds of action at their school.
Educators and researchers have long known that shadowing can lead to powerful observations and insights to drive change. The Shadow a Student Challenge provides methods and a network to help school leaders achieve Deeper Learning for all students.
Mrs. Goettl will participate in this challenge on February 15th. She will shadow one student from the beginning of the day through dismissal, putting on their sneakers, walking in their shoes, learning about their needs, in order to take action for positive change.
Mrs. Goettl should shadow me because...
I wish I could shadow each student in our elementary, but since there aren't enough days in the school year for 477 "shadowing days" I have to narrow down to just one.
Therefore I am inviting our students to tell me why it is important for me to shadow them over others. They can send me a video or written essay with their reasons why it is important to shadow them. Families can help their students (especially younger ones) with their submissions.
*Parents must provide permission for the Shadow a Student Challenge
Submissions with strong rationale will be put into a drawing.
Submissions are due on or before Feb. 1st, 2017.
The student chosen for the "Shadow a Student Challenge" will be announced on Ground Hogs Day (Feb. 2nd) and Mrs. Goettl will shadow that student Wed., Feb. 15th.

News from Mrs. Hager our School Nurse
Winter Health
- If your child suffers from winter nosebleeds, try using a cold air humidifier in the child's room at night. Saline nose drops or petrolatum jelly may help keep nasal tissues moist. If bleeding is severe or recurrent, consult your pediatrician.
- Cold weather does not cause colds or flu. But the viruses that cause colds and flu tend to be more common in the winter, when children are in school and are in closer contact with each other. Frequent hand washing and teaching your child to sneeze or cough into the bend of her elbow may help reduce the spread of colds and flu.
- Children 6 months of age and up should get the influenza vaccine to reduce their risk of catching the flu. It's not too late to get the vaccine! Around 80% of all influenza illness generally occurs in January, February, and March.
Winter Sports and Activities
- Set reasonable limits on outdoor play to prevent hypothermia and frostbite and make sure kids have a place to go warm up when they get cold. When weather is severe, have children come inside periodically to warm up.
Frostbite
- Frostbite happens when the skin and outer tissues become frozen. This condition tends to happen on extremities like the fingers, toes, ears and nose. Skin first becomes red and tingly, then gray and painful and finally white, cold and hard without pain. Blistering occurs after the skin thaws.
- Playing in temperatures or wind chills below -15° Fahrenheit should be avoided becaused exposed skin begins to freeze within minutes.
- Prevent frostbite by dressing in layers, covering all body parts when outside in cold weather. Bring children indoors if clothing gets wet.
- If frostbite occurs, bring the child indoors and place the frostbitten parts of her body in warm (not hot) water. 104° Fahrenheit (about the temperature of most hot tubs) is recommended. Warm washcloths may be applied to frostbitten nose, ears and lips.
- Administer acetaminophen or ibuprofen when you begin rewarming because as the skin thaws pain occurs.
- Do not rub the frozen areas.
- After a few minutes, dry and cover the child with clothing or blankets. Give him/her something warm to drink and seek medical attention immediately particularly if blistering occurs.
