NIS Weekly Update
December 4th, 2020
Celebrations
Northside Student Council Representatives were excited to present the Milton Food Pantry with a $3000 donation. We are very proud of our students, families, and staff for participating in "Penny Wars." At Northside, we focus on building character and showing compassion toward others while striving to make a positive difference in our world. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Cait Nelson and Student Council for organizing this fundraiser to benefit our community.
Our annual Book Fair is open online from November 30th - December 13th! We celebrate Friends of Northside for ensuring our students still have the opportunity to order books this year. There is free shipping for book orders $25 or more! https://www.scholastic.com/bf/northsideintermediateschool
Student Services, the Nutrition Team, and Texas Roadhouse partnered to provide lunch for our hardworking and dedicated staff. Staff members enjoyed a specially-prepared Thanksgiving lunch while they worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth transition to virtual learning. We greatly appreciate all they do for the students and families of Milton. Thank you to Texas Roadhouse for donating salad and rolls for this appreciation lunch.
Last, but certainly not least, we would like to celebrate the students and families for a strong start to virtual learning. We are grateful for your hard work at home to support student success. We are truly all in this together.

Physical Education
Mr. Ide and Ms. Farnsworth hosted YouTube Live virtual workouts including an “Early Bird” 5:00 am workout. “Redhawk Fitness Talk” is a weekly discussion that is open to all students. Students may schedule one-on-one virtual meets with the teachers to discuss topics such as fitness, nutrition, self-discipline, overcoming adversity, and much more. Please check Schoology for additional activities, lessons, contests, and updates (with many fun gifs).
Band
Participating in Band virtually is an adventure! Northside's 6th Grade Band warms up together each morning. A different band instrument is featured each day during this time. The warm-up exercises present a new musical element to discuss in the chat. Band students also have the opportunity to play their band pieces in what sounds like a full band experience. Students will have a new playing challenge to submit each week so that Mrs. Westlund can provide individual feedback. Besides playing together, students are engaged in playing musical Kahoots as a group and learn how to count rhythms correctly using a fun musical "coding" activity called Rhythm Reveals.
Music
Music classes will be learning about the Russian composer Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and other "classical" composers who have music that is prominently heard during December. Students are also learning the body percussion to White Winter Hymnal, a song performed by Pentatonix. The a cappella group uses snaps, claps, etc. in place of percussion instruments. Next week the music department will include more fun with holiday favorites.
Art
4th-grade students started a "Snowmen at Night" collage this week. The students listened to the book to start off the lesson and then drew three different size snowmen. 5th-grade students completed a tie-dye masterpiece that every student contributed to during this collaborative project. 6th-grade students are working on the Pop Art Portrait project using a word that is meaningful to them and creating word sculptures that truly "pop!"

Communication between school and families is critical to student success in virtual learning. Classroom inquiries or communication should be directed to your child’s teacher and our goal is to respond to family questions within 24 hours. We also encourage students to utilize the scheduled daily office hours for more immediate assistance in completing learning activities. If you have an immediate need please call our front office team for assistance.
If families would like additional support with Schoology or Skyward, please reference the weekly bulletin for tutorials or contact the Northside office.
