ISLAND OF KNOWLEDGE
As you know I love studying people both from history and present day. I enjoy working through their life stories to learn about how they thought the decisions they faced, and the time in which they lived. This process fascinates me; there is a lot to be learned.
Two men from two completely different time periods, with completely different jobs, with completely different ideals but both made contributions that shaped history in a significant way from regarding weapons of war. They both also understood humility in their brilliance.
"As our island of knowledge grows, so does the shore of our ignorance." - John Wheeler
The name John Wheeler may not stand out to you; however, he was a brilliant physicist who helped develop the hydrogen bomb. He wasn't in the military but his mind played a major role in our military. Despite being sought after for his brilliance and being one of the top thinkers in the world he understood that no matter how much knowledge he obtained that knowledge would propel him to success where he would always encounter areas he knew less about. His quote basically means that you can master your area of influence and minimize the shore of ignorance through mastery. However, that mastery will result in an improved station where similarly in ratio of growth in knowledge you will grow in your ignorance.
"Even the tallest mountains have animals that, when they stand on it, are higher than the mountain." - Genghis Khan
The name Genghis Khan should definitely ring a bell. Again, completely different time period, different position, yet had significant impact on the advancement of weapons of war. Despite his barbaric persona he was truly brilliant man. The quote above comes from a lesson of the mountain that he would share with his sons and generals to ensure they understood that no matter how successful they are there is still more to learn.
These are such great reminders from two completely different types of people from two different era's with virtually the same advice. We all get humbled whether it is by choice or not is up to us.
Lead NWA well this week!
