Newsletter 2017
DON'T FORGET TO TAKE THE SURVEY ONLINE!
Watch for this postcard in the U.S. mail and take the D91 survey
(the code is located on post card).
Dear KG Parents,
I always start this edition of the newsletter by thanking all the parents that were able to make it to parent teacher conferences. The home to school connection is an integral part of a successful education. One of our daily investments continues to be to establish the lines of communication between the teachers and parents. When the two groups are in tune with what’s happening in the child’s life at both locations, the amount of growth that can take place is astonishing.
There are two very important surveys we are asking parents to complete before the end of the calendar year. The first was sent to all families at the end of November. This district survey is feedback needed for our long term strategic plan. We encourage parents to not only take the survey but to be a part of the planning process. If you will have children in D91 for the next five years, give serious consideration to be a member of the planning committee meeting which will take place on Saturday, February 10th. Our long term goals will be formed from the outcomes at this important event. The second survey is the 5-Essential school climate survey mandated by the Illinois State Board of Education. The feedback parents and students provide on this survey is part of our school’s report card given by ISBE. This will be the first time our fourth and fifth graders will participate in the survey. Kelvin and Milne require a minimum number of parent responses to receive a valid score. We will send the link in our Friday message this month and place it on our website. Thanks for helping us reach our long term goals by giving us your input on these two important surveys.
This time of year is full of celebrations. During the final week before break on Tuesday, December 19th, is the annual holiday program with Milne Grove students. The KG choir will be center stage for a performance of “Jingle Bell Jukebox”. We will then have the opportunity to celebrate with our families while we are on winter break from Saturday, December 23rd through Monday, January 8th. Students return to class on Tuesday, January 9th. The winter does not only come with many reasons to celebrate but also it’s cold weather. While we’ve been blessed with a mild fall season, please be reminded to check to make sure your child is dressed appropriately for school and recess. Students will be outside for recess if temperatures are above 20 oF. This means heavy coats, hats, and gloves are essential to keep students warm while playing. In case of emergency closings, you may visit our website, tune in to WGN or WBBM radio, or view any of the local T.V. broadcasts for up to the minute school closing information. I hope everyone will have the opportunity to spend time with family during winter break, and I wish everyone a safe and joyous holiday season.
Sincerely,
John Jennings
Principal
I’d like to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season! I’d also like to remind you that it is cold and flu season! Remember to keep warm by dressing for the weather, keep gems away by washing your hands often and keep nourished by eating fruits and veggies daily and drinking lots of water! Also, it’s not too late to get your flu shot!
Winter break and the new year are fast approaching! With that in mind, it’s not too early to start thinking about next school year. 5th Grade Parents! - Your 5th grader will need an Illinois State Physical and updated immunizations for their 6th grade school year! Don’t wait… make your appointment now and get it completed as soon as possible. By the time August rolls around appointments will be limited and lines will be long to get those physical and vaccines completed before the exclusion date, October 15, 2018.
Current 6th Grade Parents!- Illinois State Law requires Dental Exams to be completed and turned in by the last day of school which is May 23, 2018! Don’t wait any longer- Get those dental exams completed as soon as possible. If a dental exam is not turned in for your student by the last day of school, you will not have access to your students grades until that exam is completed and received by the nurse.
Miles of Smiles will be here February 9, 2018. Miles of Smiles is a free dental health program that provides preventive dental services at school to eligible children of all grades. They will be here at Kelvin Grove to provide services including exam, cleaning, fluoride varnish and sealants if needed. This also satisfies the dental requirement mandated by the State of Illinois for school children (K, 2nd and 6th). Letters and permission slips were sent home before Thanksgiving break but are still available on the district website, if you are unable to access the website, please contact me for more details.
Thank you and Take Care!

Guidance
In Guidance classes this month, we have been talking about recognizing and categorizing our feelings related to intensity, and about the necessity to manage our feelings differently in various situations. For example, expressing strong feelings of excitement may be expected when we are at home, but those same feelings may need to be managed differently in a classroom or in a public setting. While no feelings we experience are wrong, sometimes we have difficulty managing those feelings and responding in an expected, acceptable manner. In class, we have also begun discussing strategies that we can use to manage our feelings and maintain emotional control as expected in various settings.. Please continue to talk with your child about self-control and managing emotions outside of school to develop and strengthen these important skills.
If you have any questions or suggestions regarding the guidance program, please contact me. I would love to hear from you! I would also encourage you to visit my webpage to find out more about the Guidance program and other helpful information.

6th Grade Science
6th grade Social Studies
Mr. Lindstrom’s and Mrs. Stateman’s math classes completed their second unit of number operations. Students have learned how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals and fractions without a calculator. We are continuing our third unit of study involving proportionality which studies ratios, rates, and percents.
Assignments will be given out of the text on working and lesson days with the final day of using the Personal Math Trainer to complete an online checkpoint. Text assignments should be completed on a daily basis, failure to do so means that the student is unprepared for class. Students have math homework on a daily basis and should be bringing their Go Math books home to complete them. We have two types of module assessments. The module post test is taken online and students can view their grade immediately. Module problem solvings assess students’ reasoning skills through writing and modeling all of their work.
Did you know that all students have the opportunity to retake a module assessment to attempt for greater points? We encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity when scoring anything under 100% on an assessment. All a student needs to do is sign up for a designated retake time and day, complete their personal study plan (if assigned) from home using our excellent Go Math resources, and be ready to do their best the second time around. Ask your child to login to their account and show you how to access the additional practice features.
How can I help my child with math at home?
Encourage your child to solve everyday problems involving numbers without the use of a calculator or Google.
Talk about the importance of math and how it is used in daily life.
Review your child’s homework and ask them to explain how they arrived at their solutions to problems.
View the Math on The Spot videos with your child for concepts or skills he or she may be having difficulty with.
Talk with your child’s teacher about any questions you have about the math your child is learning.

Vocabulary study continues for the sixth graders. They are using the Chromebooks to access and complete the activities for the Vocabulary Workshop program. Assignments are completed regularly with this program. If your child is absent, or doesn’t finish an assignment in class, he or she can access the program at home.
The sixth graders will continue with the study of argumentative writing. Through the lessons presented, the students will discover the purpose and structure of argumentative writing.
Our reading selections will be nonfiction and fiction pieces from our Literature texts.
In addition, book project assignments will require the students to be reading outside of school day. Please make sure that your child is completing the reading required to successfully finish these assignments.

7th Grade Science
For the months of December and January, we will be finishing up our unit of heredity and starting our unit on evolution. We will be learning about the different types of reproduction and how that will reflect the traits of their offspring. We will learn how to solve a punnett square, learn about dominant and recessive genes, and genetic engineering. For evolution, students will investigate the cause and effect relationship between genetic variations and natural selection. They will also be able to identify how environmental and genetic factors can influence the growth of organisms. We will be discussing this topic and will be doing a number of activities and labs during class to help us understand this topic.
7th grade Social Studies - Students are finishing up the American Revolution and will be moving into learning about the United States Constitution. We will begin with the Preamble, please check Mrs. Soulian’s website for videos that help with remembering the words. Each section of the Constitution will be covered, students will have study guides, please ask your student to review with them and prepare for these tests.
Seventh grade students have completed Unit 2: Ratios and Proportional Relationships. Students now know how to calculate unit rates, find proportionality from a graph, and how to calculate tax, tip, markup, and discounts. Ask your child to find the sale price or the amount of tip next time you are at the store or a restaurant, they can do it! Unit 3 will focus on expressions, equations, and inequalities. Students will be solving one and two step equations and inequalities. Let the algebra fun begin!

Following our trip to Drury Lane Theater to see the theatrical version of A Christmas Carol, the seventh grade students will compare and contrast the written drama with the theatrical production as we focus on the symbolism present within the text and how it was portrayed in the play.
Seventh grade students are beginning a unit of study that focuses on argumentative writing. This type of writing will be introduced through many different text examples and sample book reviews. Your child will then write his/her own book review to demonstrate understanding.
Thank you to all of the parents that attended Parent-Teacher Conferences. As always, we appreciate the support you provide your child and his/her teachers!

8th Grade Science
We are exploring Astronomy through our current unit.
Through our studies of the solar system we have answered the questions:
What is the Universe? What goes on in Stars? What are the predictable patterns caused by Earth's movement in the solar system?
Coming up next, we will be exploring each of the planets in our solar system by doing a group research presentation.
Throughout December, we will be exploring the time period between the 1890’s and the 1920’s in the United States known as the Progressive Era. This was a time of immense change for the United States. The Industrial Revolution attracted an immense number of immigrants, as well as people from rural areas of the United States, to large city hubs like Chicago, New York and Pittsburgh. The students will cover the challenges that this increase in population caused to the city governments and infrastructure. The students will also discuss and research how grassroots reformers (Progressives) crusaded to call attention to the deteriorating city conditions due to rapid growth and industrialization, and how their work changed the way Americans live today.
Eighth grade students have finished Unit 2: Proportional and Nonproportional Relationships and Functions. Students have learned how to find the slope and y-intercept of linear relationships from a table, graph, and equation, be able to write linear equations from situations, and identify functions. We will begin our Unit 3: Solving Equations and Systems of Equations in December. Encourage the use of the excellent Math on the Spot videos if your child is having difficulty with the material.

The 8th graders have started their first class novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Stay tuned to Mr. Prieboy’s website for further details regarding the book! We have been busy lately exploring the idea of choices and how those choices push the story in a certain direction. Students will also explore the possibility of how a story could change if the choices made by the characters would be different. We also have been working on our Informational Writing unit.
The 8th grade students are continuing to work hard on their Sadlier Connect Online vocabulary assignments. The website is a great tool for at-home practice for students. It includes extra practice worksheets, games, and even flashcards to help give students a deeper understanding of the assigned words. Follow the link from Mr. Prieboy’s webpage to find out more.

Technology Class
The month of December is all about coding.
8th grade is focusing on apps and how the concept of applications has grown over the past few years due to the evolution of the cell phone into smart phones. Each student will select one app that inspires them, do research, and create a flyer using Google Drawings. Once students are done, they will code and build their own apps on Code.org. Check out Mrs. Lakics’ website for past class apps that students have coding on their own.
Junior High CAD
This month, we worked on reading skills, antonyms and synonyms, and vowel patterns. In math, we reviewed money, time, graphs and multiplication. We continue to fill in organization webs for writing paragraphs, staying on topic, and correcting our errors. In Science, we reviewed all the planets and made a book with facts for each one. Then, we took a field trip to the Planetarium and saw a movie about traveling thru space to different planets. It was awesome! One of our favorite things each week is cooking. Hamburger Helper was a big hit!
Happy Holidays! All students will complete a holiday inspired ceramic ornament to share with their families for the season. Each personal ornament will be a great gift that will shine and sparkle on the holiday tree. Additionally in the months ahead, the fourth and fifth grade art students will also study the color wheel and will be putting their color knowledge to use by creating copy cat paintings – practicing the different painting styles and techniques of both Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. The fourth grade students will be using Van Gogh and his masterpiece, “Starry Night” as inspiration and the fifth grade students will be starting a formal painting using Claude Monet to motivate their efforts.
The second trimester exploratory classes have just begun and students have started their place card to identify their seat in art class. They will also start their portfolio, which will house all their work in progress, and sketchbook for class within the weeks ahead.
Please note the following ART CLUB dates in December and January:

The cheerleaders attended NCA Camps over the summer and learned many new skills to incorporate into the competition routine.
As the cheerleaders begin their competition season, the expectations are high to perform well and bring back the state trophy to Kelvin Grove. The competition schedule is:
November 19 at Wilmington High School
December 2 at Reed-Custer High School
December 9 at Lincoln-Way East High School
December 17 at Joliet West High School
January 14 at Plainfield South High School
January 20 at IESA State Competition at Peoria Civic Center
The Learning Resource Center transforms into a “Winter Wonderland” this time of year, with the help of KG student-created snowflakes and student projects. It's a great time of year to continue to read as a family. Hot chocolate or a cup of tea and a good book is the perfect ending to a long winter day!
We continue to reach out to authors using Google Hangouts, Skype and the LRC's Twitter. It's important that we help our students make real-world connections with authors and writers in the United States and across the world. We will be connecting with students in Japan this trimester, learning about Hana's Suitcase and exchanging ideas.
There are many winter literacy activities and skills instructions taking place in the LRC throughout December and January. Plagiarism prevention and credible sources will continue to be highlighted. The JOY of reading -- and student choice -- will be stressed as we highlight and book talk Caudill nominees.
We are delighted to be receiving print materials totalling $1500.00 from the LBSS Read for Information grant the LRC was recently awarded. Thanks to Illinos School Library Media Association for awarding the KG LRC this sought-after grant award. Thanks also to the Illinois State Library
Happy Holidays and have a wonderful winter break!
Thanks also to the Illinois State Library who continues to provide us with items for our MakerSpace Tech Petting Zoo!
Thank you to author Ed Masessa for sending KG LRC a copy of "Wandmaker's Guidebook" for our reference collection.
Students will be using greenscreen to tell winter stories and to illustrate setting. These stories will help us kick off Passport to Reading: Read Around the World in January.
Volunteers needed:
If you have an hour of time to spare each week, your help in shelving LRC books would be most appreciated. Email Mrs. Bruemmer at sbruemmer@d91.net
Student Council - Student Council successfully hosted the Halloween dance, many thanks to the students attending for their creative costumes and fun times. Please keep watch for upcoming dates and other ways to donate. In January we will hold our annual Souper Bowl, please help us collect food to donate to our local food pantry here in Lockport. Thank you for your continued support.
Nature Club - The students have been very excited to begin Nature Club, we have collected leaves and created our own fall leaf animals. We are going to be baking cookies for the birds and placing them on the trees around our building. We are currently planning a field trip and are looking into a few options, more details to come. During the winter months we will be focused on recycling and planning for the spring planting.
Yearbook club is in full swing. Students have picked out a cover for our yearbook and have been tagging photos of KG students. Our goal is to get ALL students in at least one candid shot in the yearbook and we need everyone’s help. All yearbook members have their own login for Jostens and can even tag photos at home.
