Principal's Message
Kellogg Families,
We had a fantastic first week to Quarter 4 last week. Students, teachers, and staff were excited to start the final quarter of the school year on a positive note. On Friday we hosted grade-level assemblies that included information about the 2024 Day of (No) Silence, a celebration of Arab American Heritage Month, and an epic ice cream competition.
On Tuesday, April 16th, Kellogg as well as schools across the district will be honored at the annual HeART of Portland: A Portland Public Schools K-12 Arts Showcase at the Portland Art Museum from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. As a thank you to taxpayers for their support of the Arts Tax, this year’s event begins with a free, open reception featuring a robust, district-wide visual art exhibit and student performances. For full details, click here.
Have a wonderful week ahead!
Mr. Thai Nguyen

Message from our School Climate Coordinator
Hello Kellogg Family and Community! I realized that I never properly introduced myself when I began my current role last year. My name is Hannah Maurer. Some of our Kellogg families may already know me, as I transitioned from being a 6th grade Spanish Immersion teacher at Kellogg Middle School to becoming Kellogg's School Climate Specialist in October 2022. I took over this role from Gillian Murr, who now serves as the Director of PPS' Indian Education Department.
I assist Kellogg in several ways, but my primary duties include supporting the implementation of school-wide systems and responding to calls for behavior support in classrooms. Additionally, I provide coaching and support to teachers to help them improve their classroom practices. I also work with students, teachers, and administrators to find solutions and resolutions to discipline and incident reports.
As an educator and someone who has the privilege to work with our middle school community, my top priority is to create a safe and supportive learning environment that students would love to be a part of. I come from central Illinois, where the value of community was instilled in me. As I continue in this role, I hope to establish stronger bonds between families and the Kellogg Middle School community and be a valuable resource for our families.
Hallway sweeps, On-time raffle, Tardy attendance, and Lunch detention
As we start the 4th quarter of our school year we will be implementing three targeted interventions to address school wide tardy attendance.
1. Weekly Random Hallway Sweeps: Scheduled hallway sweeps where students who are not on time to class and without a pass are re-taught school-wide expectations on arriving to class on time.
2. On-time Attendance Raffle: Paired with these weekly hallway sweeps, teachers will distribute a roar ticket to each student who was on time to be collected and entered in a drawing to win a reward the following day to celebrate our students who daily get to all their classes on time.
3. Lunch detention: Starting the first week of the 4th quarter, we will pull tardy data weekly and assign one lunch detention every 5 times a student receives a tardy.

Restorative Justice Update
Hello Kellogg Families!
As we head into the final quarter of the school year, I wanted to give a shout out to our students! This has been a tumultuous year and there have been many unexpected challenges that we all have had to face, and I have seen a lot of perseverance and growth from our students over the course of this year. I have seen communication skills grow between peers, I have seen communication come from students to their teachers around what they need to succeed, and I have seen engagement from our staff and students in circles that occur in the classroom. I have received around 112 requests at this point in the year for restorative justice in Kellogg, and there have been many successes found from those resolutions.
If you have any questions about our Restorative Justice processes or would like to connect, please feel free to send me an email at icordes@pps.net.
In community,
Isaac Cordes
