A Compass Note:
Resilience and Mistakes
In reviewing some of our Leader in Me resources this week, we came across a piece that spoke to the importance that mistakes can have in building resilience in our children and students. Here is some of what was shared in the article:
Resilience - Is our capacity to overcome and recover from adversity. Without it, we give up when life brings us difficult experiences.
How can we use our words and actions to grow resilience in our {children and} students? We can make room for mistakes! When we embrace slips and blunders as a necessary part of learning, we help students build resilience for the big problems in life by starting with the small ones.
Tips for supporting this:
- First, we can candidly model our own mistake-enlightened triumphs. We can say things like, “I didn’t mean to mess up and I’m actually kind of glad I did, because it taught me something I wouldn’t have learned otherwise."
- Then, we can lead learning around the principles of perseverance and continuous improvement. These principles are especially important when we feel we’re coming up short!
The truth is that we are all imperfect and will make mistakes. Using our mistakes to model the attributes of resilience and not giving up in the face of adversity is one of the best ways that we can teach and instill this attribute in our children and students.
Have a great week Compass family!
