Online Discussions
Why should you use online discussion in your classroom?
- Written responses allow time to reflect and synthesize information.
- Online conversations minimize the chance of someone dominating the conversation.
- Online discussions increase chances for involvement from those who may be reluctant to speak out in class.
- Online discussions provide a record of past shared responses, meaning you can look back and see what a student did or did not understand.
How can I do this in my class?
- Create discussion questions that get the conversation going naturally. (High interest, connected to real world and instruction)
- Use image or video prompts.
- Use a rubric to help facilitate good online conversations.
- Model what you expect to see from your students.
- Don't worry too much if the conversation goes off topic. (Think of all the chances for personal connections to the learning!)
