Meadow Park News

Principal's Corner
Hello Eagle Families,
We have just a few short weeks left of school for the 2019-2020 school year. Our staff is working hard to find a way to celebrate with our 8th grade students who will be leaving us for high school. Hopefully, all 8th grade families received my message earlier this week about a survey that students need to take. That survey has had over 160 responses in less than 24 hours! In addition to the email all students and families were sent, we have published it to social media and created a banner announcement on Canvas. We want to get as close to 100% response as possible, so ask your child if they have filled it out and have them reach out to friends that may not be as active on Canvas and email.
Here’s the info for the survey: Attention All Meadow Park 8th Graders - Information Needed by THIS SUNDAY! We are in the planning phases of celebrating our 8th grade class for their accomplishments at Meadow Park and designing activities to help you get excited about heading to high school. Please complete this REQUIRED survey to let us know some important information. Head here: https://forms.gle/5k18fDc6w1ehvtXk7
Our 8th graders will have a drive-thru style, socially-distanced celebration on Thursday, June 11th from 1-4. We look forward to celebrating with our students and families then and will provide more detail in the near future! For now, please just mark your calendars and plan to join us at a window of time to be specified later.
Additionally, we are reaching out to our 6th and 7th grade teachers to begin organizing some digital recognition within student teams. As strange as this year has been, it is more important than ever that we celebrate with our students and work to provide a sense of closure to the year.
As a quick reminder, last week we asked families to sign up for locker clean-out if they had any items left behind. The first session is coming up this week. If you haven’t signed up yet, I’ll be turning off signups the day prior to each pickup. The links to sign up are in the newsletter below.
Also, for those wondering about the administrative transfer process for the upcoming school year I will be meeting with other principals during the first week of June to discuss requests. We will be adhering to the language in the hardship process as we make those decisions. I would expect families who have already submitted a request to hear back from us by June 11th.
Stay healthy, be well, and make it a great week!

Collecting Community Service Hours
Greetings MPMS students and parents!
Part of our normal “end of the year wrap up” is collecting information from students about the community service they participated in over the past semester. Not only is this a requirement as part of our MYP accreditation, it is also a really nice opportunity to recognize students who have served their community.
Activities that count towards community service are things like:
Participating in Eagle Crew
Volunteering to clean up trash within your school or home community (like with SOLVE)
Volunteering at a food pantry (like the Oregon Food Bank)
Volunteering to help build or fix something within your community (like Habitat for Humanity)
Volunteering to work with senior citizens (like Meals on Wheels)
There are lots of other examples. If you have questions about what counts/doesn’t count, please contact your Advisory teacher.
While activities like “cleaning up my yard” or “helping my brother clean his room” are great ways to help your family, those are not examples of activities that can be used for this community service form.
Students, please fill out this form for your community service activity you completed during Semester 2 of this year (from February 1 until May 28). There are three activity sections per form so that you don’t have to fill out the form for each individual activity. If you only completed one or two activities, you may fill in the answers for the second or third activity with the number 0 or the word “none.”

PARK Food Pantry
On Wednesday, our staff put together approximately 20 food boxes along with other items that were available through our Meadow Park Food Pantry. If you are in need of an extra box of food during these challenging times, please stop by our school on May 28th between 9 am and 11 am or on June 1st between 5 pm and 7 pm. It is on a first come, first serve basis.
Also, if you or someone you know would like to donate to our food pantry, we are currently in need of gift card donations to Fred Meyer, Target, or Winco. Gift cards can be dropped off at school during our school office hours each Tuesday and Wednesday between 8 and 10 am or you can email your gift card donation to mpmseagles@gmail.com.
We are so appreciative of the support you have continued to offer our Meadow Park community!

Meadow Park’s Samuel Fishback - Published Scientist!
Meadow Park 8th Grader, Samuel Fishback’s manuscript titled "A scientific investigation of alternative growing methods to cultivate Lactuca sativa utilizing aquaponics and hydroponics" has been published on The Journal of Emerging Investigators (JEI) website.
Samuel first learned about and became interested in hydroponics in the 5th grade. During his research into hydroponics, he discovered aquaponics. He wondered if one of the growing methods was superior, so he experimented with both. Samuel’s Science teacher, Dr. Susan Duncan encouraged him to look into the JEI as a way to publish his findings. She helped him to edit his scientific article and gave him access to other sources for background research and subject matter experts. “Aquaponics and hydroponics aren’t usually compared together, so the thought that others may be able to benefit from my research inspired me to go through with publishing my work,” says Samuel.
"Samuel made two remarkable choices. First, he chose to follow his curiosity, which led to two, year-long investigations. Second, he chose to share his findings with the community. He continually worked to make his writing and editing even better through the year-long process of publication. The publication of his article is a tribute to the dedicated student he is. He made the most of every opportunity to learn from visiting Terra Nova High School to reading articles published by other researchers in his field of interest,” says Dr. Susan Duncan, Meadow Park Science Teacher. “It makes me smile to know future students and researchers will be using the in-text citation, (Fishback, 2020), as they follow their curiosity."
When asked what advice he might give other Emerging Investigators, Samuel replied, “While the long review process and pages of editing comments may seem daunting at first, it’s all worth it to see a perfected, finalized paper that can be seen by the world.”
The Journal of Emerging Investigators is an open-access journal that publishes original research in the biological and physical sciences that is written by middle and high school students. JEI provides students, under the guidance of a teacher or advisor, the opportunity to submit and gain feedback on original research and to publish their findings in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
Spotlight on Learning in Spanish Class!
Students in Mrs. Baglin’s Spanish classes were asked to create a three generational family tree describing their various family members & siblings and then say something about each of them, individually. They were asked to use as much variety as possible in their descriptions. They could focus on age, birthdays, nationalities, languages spoken, physical appearances, professions, hobbies, likes/dislikes etc. Their visual aid could be created in the form of a book, poster, photo, slides, video etc.
Outstanding PARK art work!
Each week, Mr. Marshall has been highlighting some amazing art work on our Meadow Park Instagram page. For more details - visit mpmseagles on Instagram. A big shout out to our artists of the week and honorable mention artists. We appreciate your commitment to remote learning and the arts. Your dedication is noticed and we celebrate your creativity!

Dear Meadow Park Parents and Guardians...
It’s data collection time again for Beaverton’s Safe Routes to School program. The purpose of this program is to make walking and biking to school safe, convenient and fun.
Parent’s and guardian’s input into how students travel to and from schools and their impression of the safety of the route is valuable as the city and county prioritize needed improvements for our roads.
The following link was generated from the National Safe Routes to School Center and will be used to give us a good picture of how students are getting to and from schools throughout the district
The school’s survey will be open for responses until May 31. We appreciate your help in giving us information to make our program effective for all Beaverton School District students.
