Message from Ms. Lambert
Dear Parents,
Week two and Back to School Night is here already! There are two opportunities to visit your child's class - 6:00 p.m. or 6:45 p.m. The teacher will repeat their presentation at these times. Remember to sign in at each room as we are tracking family attendance for our Five Star Award dinner at the end of the year. There will also be a few information tables near the office with some valuable information about available resources. At 5:30 -6:00 p.m. and 7:30 - 8:00 p.m. there will be free and reduced price lunch application assistance in the staff lounge.
I'm looking forward to seeing you in the classrooms!
Best Regards,

Box Tops for Education
Welcome back to Castro! This is a new year to save Box Tops to raise money for our school. Please remember to check your packages before recycling, to see if you find a coupon to clip. Each small coupon is worth 10 cents. Ten coupons are worth $1.00, so they add up fast! Ask family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers to save them for your child. It is a great way to support your child’s education. Save them! You may turn them in at any time through the year. Collection boxes have been placed in each Castro classroom and there is a collection box in the office.

What is the Living Classroom Program???
What is the Living Classroom Program???:
The Living Classroom inspires children to value our natural world through garden-based education. We provide Kindergarten through fourth grade classrooms with hour-long lesson that correlate with current science, math and social studies standards. Living Classroom takes a hands-on, inquiry approach to learning which ensures our lessons are effective AND fun!
Last year, was the third year of the Living Classroom program at our Castro school, and a total of 29 lessons were taught to TK, 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th grades. We hope to reach all our Kinder and Fifth grade classes this year as well.
Living Classroom Lessons: There are over 50 lessons offered, here are a few samples;
Garden Greetings! Kindergarten students explore the garden while planting seedlings, practicing using tolls safely, and going on a scavenger hunt.
Growing Vegetable Soup: First graders harvest vegetable they planted in the school garden to prepare a tasty and nutritious vegetable soup.
From Seed to Pretzel: Second graders experience the life cycle of whet by planting wheat seeds in the fall, harvesting, threshing, and grinding the wheat berries to make flour, and baking pretzels.
Three Sisters Garden: In the spring, third graders plant a garden as a gift to next year’s class. During the fall, incoming third graders harvest and measure the crops.
Who teaches the lessons?:
Trained volunteer docents lead and assist with lessons. Interested in sharing your love of nature and outdoor learning with students? Just ask your child’s teacher if you can join their class for a garden lesson. This is only a one hour time commitment.J
Castro First Grade Parents:
As you know, the Redwood Garden is one of the most used and loved play areas on our campus. (Located across from classroom #1 & #2.) As you may have noticed, there is a lot of trash lying about this garden due to so much student and public traffic. It would be wonderful if some first grade parents and their children could be custodians of the Redwood Garden this year. Being a custodian of the garden would mean picking one day a week, at pick up or drop off, to quickly walk through the Redwood Garden to pick up paper and plastic trash lying about. If a handful of parents could coordinate their efforts, there could be a custodian for each day of the school week. There is no sign up for this, just talk to the parents in your classroom and do it!!! Your children will enjoy doing this task with you. J J J J
Sincerely, Castro PTA Garden
