Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Community,
It was so great to see so many of our parents at our Parent Education Evening on Wednesday. Thank you for attending. We do hope that you left with a better idea of how your child spends their day. Montessori is an incredibly beautiful and magical pedagogy. The theory and practice are immersed in best practices for learning. I know your mind was blown a few times as you listened to the learning objectives of the incredible materials and saw lesson presentations. I heard many of you walk away saying how much you wish you had been a Montessori child!
This week we will kick off our annual Fun Run Fundraiser. If you are new to Shaw, this is an event that the children LOVE. The Run will be held on Wednesday, September 28th. The primary children will run from 9-10, the lower elementary children from 10:15 to 11:15 and the upper elementary middle school children from 11:30-12:30. Parents are welcome to come and cheer on the children. We also need a lot of extra hands throughout the morning. You may sign up for volunteer time at: https://sites.google.com/view/shawmontessoripta/home This is our PTA website, scroll to the blue ribbon on the middle of the page. More information on the Run in the PTA section below.
We look forward to seeing you this week at our Site Council/PTA Meeting to be held on Wednesday, September 21st. During Site Council from 5:30-6:00 our upper elementary and middle school teachers will be distributing AASA (Arizona Academic Standards Assessment) results to parents. Our school wide achievement data will also be presented that evening. PTA will be held immediately following Site Council from 6:00-7:00. Pizza and babysitting will be available.
Help! We need a person to help do a small cement job on our “River Model”. The project will need a bag of concrete to be applied to a metal V trough. Please contact me if you are this person at: susan.engdall@phxschools.org The project should not take more than a couple of hours.
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

Message From Nurse Rose
On field trips, if your student uses an albuterol inhaler or needs an Epi-pen and they are stored at school they will bring stored medication with them carried by one of the teachers. If you have not brought in an inhaler or Epi-pen, you may bring it on the day of the field trip to give to staff. Please make sure you stop by nurse’s office to complete a Medication Permission Form if you do this. The nurse’s office has 2 Epi-pens and 2 Epi-pen Juniors , but they must remain in the nurse’s office in case of a school emergency. All teachers carry cell phones, so in the event of an emergency while on a field trip, 911 will be called and they carry Epinephrine and Albuterol, however, there will be a delay while waiting for EMS. If you have any questions/concerns, you can call me at 602.257.3900
Thanks! Rose RN

Picture Day
Sibling School Photos
Picture day is almost here! On Thursday 9/29, we will host picture day at Shaw. This year, we are not using Lifetouch as we have in the past. We will be offering photos through TSS Photography. TSS will photograph ALL children individually and get a group shot with each class. In addition to this, we will offer sibling photos as usual- via sign up ONLY. Please note, if you do not contact the school office prior to 9/28/22, your children will NOT BE SCHEDULED for a sibling photograph, no exceptions. Re-takes offered on 10/19/22 will also be offered via sign up ONLY.
Photographs are not purchased in advance. Shortly after picture day, you will receive an email link inviting you to preview your child’s photo, prior to purchasing directly through TSS Photography.
Please email Christina.Girard@phxschools.org or call 602-523-8971 to schedule a sibling photo. Thank you!

The Fun Run and Color Run is an event planned by the PTA members for raising money for new school areas. The Fun Run and the Color Run will be on Wednesday, September 28th. It will be on the field near the back gate. The Color Run is for 4th and above while the Fun Run is for 3rd and under.
What happens at Fun Run? Primary and Lower Elementary will run laps to donate and get prizes. The parents will also be there cheering them on. The PTA thought the Color Run would be more fun and productive for the older kids. The Color Run will be an event similar to the Fun Run but with students throwing colors everywhere. They will also give out water during Fun Run and Color Run for your kids' health.
You can also let other people know that they can raise money too! You can raise money on mybooster.com by making a pledge for your student.

Garden Update
Greetings!
We started planting this week! What a glorious time to be in the garden. Some of the students needed a reminder about their attitudes in the garden. This is an intentional space not unlike a yoga studio or a church. Our dispositions and intentions can really affect the energy in the garden. This is the ultimate creative space-we’re creating life! Let’s remind our students that the garden is not a playground. It is Mother Nature’s studio.
We planted a third of the furrows. We sowed basil, chamomile, chives, marigold, cilantro, zinnias, carrots, peas and onions. Next week we will sow the rest of the rows and plant our four sisters companion plants (pumpkin, corn, beans and sunflowers). We will wait until the parent workday to sow flowers along the west perimeter. Bring your kiddos to help!
Mark your calendars for September 21st. We will be hosting an agua fresca stand at pick-up and again before the PTA meeting. Please bring your cash and support our garden program! I’m also asking for a classroom volunteer to purchase vermicomposting bins for their child’s classroom. Each class needs two totes. They both need to be the same size and can be anywhere from a 12 Gallon to a 27 Gallon. Here’s a link to the Home Depot totes:
Our parent workday is two weeks away! We will be excavating the perimeter of the field garden and planting some flowers. Please bring your shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows if you have them. ALSO, please bring a potted flower of your choice. We can transplant them at the end of the workday after we excavate and amend our area. The spectacular Mrs. Kutsko has created a sign-up portal for volunteers. You can register by clicking the link below: https://signup.com/go/DUmYais
Here’s my email in case you need to reach me: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Home Depot gift cards are always appreciated. Continue bringing your aluminum cans, coffee grounds, eggshells and bottle caps. You can leave them on the table outside the front office except for the bottle caps. Have your child drop them in their classroom bin.
If you have any flagstone cuts or wood cuts we will also take them. We will also accept any tool donations for the field garden and/or ODE.
Mr. Moench
P.S. The class winner of the bottle cap drive will be rewarded with an ice cream and popsicle party in the spring!

Fun Run!
WHAT IS FUN RUN?
Fun Run is a fundraiser for Shaw Montessori PTA where the kids run around on the field and have a fun time all while bringing in funds to improve our school! Kids in PK - 3rd grade do a fun run, and kids in 4th - 8th grade do a color run where they get non-toxic powder thrown at them (it sounds gross, but they love it, and there is an inner track if they don't want color thrown on them)
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Each kid can receive pledges either based per lap or a flat donation. Those pledges can come from anywhere -- your neighbors, coworkers, relatives, family friends -- you name it!
OK. HOW DO THEY GET PLEDGES?
It's super easy. You just have to register your child on mybooster.com. Once they are registered, you will have a link that you can send out or share on social media. The more pledges they get, the more prizes they get and the more money they raise for the school!
PRIZES?:
Yes. There are prizes that the kids get. Just for registering, they get a bracelet, and from there the prizes get bigger. If they get enough pledges, they can get a drone or a motorized scooter. The prizes for color run and fun run are different, so check out the prizes available on your mybooster.com dashboard. While those bigger prizes are based on pledges, all students -- REGARDLESS OF MONEY BROUGHT IN -- receive a Fun Run TShirt from the PTA.
WAIT. HOW DO I REGISTER?
Super easy. Here's what you do:
1. Go to mybooster.com
2. Click on "I'm a Parent/Guardian
3. Search for and select your student's appropriate event (Fun run for PK-3rd Grade, Color Run for 4th and up). If you have multiple students you will need to add them separately.
4. Enter in your student's name and select their teacher from the drop-down list (If you don't see your teacher's name, make sure you are on the right run -- Fun run for 3rd grade and under, Color run for 4th and older.)
5. agree to the terms of participation and click on "Add Student"
That's it....You are ready to Run!
WHY DO THEY WANT MY KIDS PHOTO?
Adding the photo makes your friends and family more liely to pledge, because who can resist that cute face? Also (and this is pretty cool) there is this student star video where they put your kid's picture in the video. It's super cute and Grandparents especially love it. But if you don't have a photo, not to worry. You can add it at any time.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS AGAIN?
Good question. Doing a fun run is the easiest way to take some of the financial burden off our parents while still raising money for our school. Outdoor environment, the solar system model, the trees and all of the campus improvements we have made to the school have been able to happen because of the Fun Run. This year, we are raising money for our Practical Life Classroom!
PLUS, don't forget, your teacher receives 10% of the pledges brought in by the class!
WHEN WILL MY KID BE RUNNING?
Everything is happening Wednesday, September 28th. We will have 2 different Fun Run times for the PK - 3rd Graders. Some will be running from 9-10, and some will be running from 10:15 - 11:15. The Color Run will happen on 2 tracks from 12pm - 1pm.
CAN I WATCH THE KIDS RUN AROUND THE TRACK?
YES! You Can!
CAN I VOLUNTEER AND WATCH MY KIDS RUN?
YES. Yes you can. We need a few volunteers that day to help the kids stay hydrated at the water table. It will be HOT! You will need a hat. If you are signed up for the color run, you WILL get dirty so dress accordingly.
Sign up to volunteer here: https://signup.com/go/efJSKqg
WHERE CAN I ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FUN RUN?
The PTA Meeting this Wednesday (9/21) at 6pm in the cafeteria is the PERFECT time to ask questions. If you are wondering something, chances are someone else is too. Otherwise, please send an email to Leigh Ann at president@shawmontessoripta.com.
HAPPY FUN RUN EVERYBODY!
