Counselor's Corner
The 2020 Census counts every person living in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. In mid-March, homes across the country will begin receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, you should respond for your home in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail. Everyone living in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories is required by law to be counted in the 2020 Census.
The 2020 Census is easy. You will answer a simple questionnaire about yourself and everyone who is living with you on April 1, 2020. The U.S. Census Bureau is bound by law to protect your answers and keep them strictly confidential. In fact, every employee takes an oath to protect your personal information for life. The census does not ask about citizenship status, and non-citizens should be counted in the census. Your answers cannot be shared with law enforcement and will not be used against you. The census does NOT ask for your social security number, donations, anything on behalf of a political party, or your bank account or credit card numbers.
The 2020 Census is more than a population count. It's an opportunity to shape the future of your community. The 2020 Census will determine congressional representation, inform hundreds of billions in federal funding, and provide data that will impact communities for the next decade. School lunches. Plans for highways. Support for firefighters and families in need. Census results affect your community every day.
