TerraNichol Academy of the Arts
Our Learning Journey This Week February 10th-13th, 2019
Our journey and wonder in learning labs this week.
This week in learning labs students are celebrating friendship and love! We had so much fun stamping, writing special messages to our friends and teaching team, creating friendship jewelry and creating friendship postcards for friends and family members during outdoor learning labs. In writing workshop, we are creating our own stories about friendship, love, peace, and kindness. The dramatic play area has been busy with the Postal Office open from 9 to 3 sending mail and packages to our friends and family! Students are learning to create letters and their own unique postage stamps! We have created friendship experience literacy charts and discussed what friendship means to us and what we enjoy doing with our friends.
Art Appreciation led us to the fabulous worlds of classical ballet, modern dance and students were introduced to the fabulous artist Edgar Degas. We will explore dancer poses, dance movements, dressing up in dance costumes and creating our very own watercolor masterpieces through the eyes of a dancer. As we began discussing our featured artist Edgar Degas. We learned that he was born in France. He went to art school in Paris, he was fascinated by movement and he is best known for his drawings of dancers and racehorses. Degas once said he wanted to "paint life through a keyhole" --meaning he wanted to capture people as they really looked, rather than in formal poses. He created over 1500 pictures and sculptures of dancers.
The students worked hard on creating their backgrounds to their masterpieces, sketching, painting and adding dancers to the paintings.
The sun was shining, the week was beautiful, everyone came with open arms and hearts full of love to celebrate our friendship week! We enjoyed dancing to the Jazz and Motown music! It was a jazzy good time!
We will continue the projects influenced by love, respect and friendship students will be creating Friendship Chains, continue writing letters and cards for friends at school and home, exploring with hearts through art, math, science, and glow time experiences.
REGULATION THROUGH DISCUSSION
We use gathering times to discuss multiple perspectives to a problem and engage in processes of negotiation. Often, in learning labs children will write their own set of guidelines and expectations for shared spaces. When children naturally exhibit kind or cooperative behavior, teachers take note of their efforts and acknowledge the emotional regulation involved.
We have developed kindness principles for framing our interactions with the world.
We take care of ourselves and our earth.
We take care of each other and our pets.
We take care of our materials and the school community.
Respect, Kindness, and love is the only way.
Have a fabulous 4 day weekend.
