Principal's Corner
The beginning of the school year is off to a great start. Students are building relationships with their classmates and teachers. Everyone is doing a great job remembering to Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Safe as they learn daily routines and procedures.
We have started our fall testing this week. Your child will take the NWEA Reading, NWEA Math, and NWEA Language tests. Teachers are also conducting Running Records with each of their students. This is the assessment tool we use to determine your child’s reading level.
I strongly believe in communication between parents, teachers, and principals to ensure the success of every child. I have an open door policy and invite your visits at any time. If I am not available, we can arrange a time to meet to discuss your needs.
Your partner in education,
Ms. Christina Johnson
Steeby Elementary Principal

Media Center News
Happy New School Year! In media class this month we are refreshing our memory on how to log in and out of a computer and also use educational websites on Information Place. Students enjoy learning on many of the websites on Information Place and can access it at home. The website for Information Place is https://sites.google.com/waylandunion.org/libraries/home. Currently second graders are learning on Starfall and Bookflix. While third graders are learning on Abcya.com and Bookflix which are all on Information Place. Students are also filling out a reading survey. It will help me know what books interest students for our school library. Happy Reading and Happy September!

Art Corner
Hi! I am Mrs. Spicer and I am so excited to start a new role as the Art Teacher at Steeby this year. This is the start of my 12th year with Wayland Union Schools. I taught Young 5's for 2 years and taught the all-girls Kindergarten class at Baker for the past 9 years. When the art position opened up I just knew it was the place for me!
I am so excited to work with past students and get to know new students this year in art. We will be spending the year, drawing, painting, and creating in art. Look for great artwork in the hallways and coming home soon!

Physical Education Fun
Physical Education at Steeby is a little different than last year. This year we are not using the cafeteria because we have a fitness room! Now half the class is spent in the gym and half of class in the fitness room so that both P.E. classes get some gym time every time they have P.E. Our fitness room includes: 1. Ladders for fast foot speed and agility 2. Jump boxes for step ups with weights 3. Exercise bikes 4. Trampolines 5. A workout mat for a large number of exercises. One week in and the students have been getting very sweaty in there already! The classes in the gym are playing games to start the year off with some fun and good exercise. Soccer will be our first unit starting in week 3.

"This is Wayland" Halloween 5K & Fall Fest T-Shirt Contest
"This is Wayland" will be having a t-shirt design contest for students to participate in. Any student who would like to can submit a design that will be voted on and the winner will receive $100 plus $100 towards a program or classroom of their choosing. We are just looking for something Halloween themed that includes Wayland Halloween 5K in the design somehow. We would like to have all designs turned in to Nissa Morgan by October 1st so that we can have the voting done in time to get the shirts printed.
