Addie also got to work with composer Aaron Perrine who composed one of the band pieces specifically for Addie's band.

Mental Health Minute
Imagine having a portable way to relieve stress, banish worries, and bring about inner peace anytime, anywhere. Meditation has been used for thousands of years to do just that, and it can be practiced anywhere, even while waiting in line at the grocery store. Different types of meditation include guided meditation (guided imagery using all of your senses and generally led by a teacher), mantra meditation (repeating a calming word or phrase to clear your mind), mindfulness meditation (focus on breathing, thoughts and emotions), Qi Gong (combines meditation, relaxation, movement, and breathing), Tai Chi (a slow series of martial arts movements with deep breathing), transcendental meditation (repeating a mantra that allows you to relax your mind to bring about inner peace), and yoga. Meditation incorporates focusing your attention with relaxed breathing and a comfortable body position. You may need to start in a quiet setting and with more practice can begin to engage in meditation in any setting.
In addition to promoting relaxation and reducing stress, meditation has been associated with positively benefiting many chronic medical conditions. When engaged in meditation, you are able to clear your mind and relax your body which helps with self-awareness, positive emotions, a lower heart rate and blood pressure, and improved sleep. For more information and a plethora of links to websites and apps for meditation for adults and kids, please see “Meditation for Kids: A Beginner’s Guide” on https://www.parents.com/toddlers-preschoolers/development/behavioral/meditation-for-kids-a-beginner-s-guide/

Parent School Climate Survey
Each year the state asks school districts to provide a School Climate Survey to parents. This survey window opened on February 27. This survey information will help us to best address the needs of your child and family and foster a more successful and positive learning environment.
We ask that all parents complete the survey. The survey closes on April 7, 2023.
You can access the survey using PowerSchool Parent Portal. Follow these steps:
Navigate to the Parent Portal Login page: https://ccsdschools.powerschool.com/public/
Enter your Username and Password to login.
Under “Forms,” select “Parent School Climate Survey.”
Complete the survey and click “Submit.”
Note: Families should complete only one survey for each of their enrolled children.
Parents that are new to Parent Portal will have received an email with the access codes to set up and link their child to their parent portal account. If you are having trouble accessing your account, please contact our Data Clerk, Devon Gamble at devon_gamble@charleston.k12.sc.us
Your time and effort in completing this survey is greatly appreciated.
Parent Portal Access
Need help with Parent Portal? Please see these "How To" videos.
All parents should have a Parent Portal log in for a variety of reasons, to include:

Gentle Reminders
Do you need to pick your child up early?
We know that there are times when you need to pick your child up from school in the middle of the day for a doctor's appointment or some other event. When this pick up occurs during lunch/recess time, it limits the amount of adult supervision because the teacher needs to go with the student to unlock doors/cabinets. This is a safety concern! To alleviate this issue, we are asking that parents SEND A NOTE TO THE HOMEROOM TEACHER as to what time your child will be picked up. Therefore, the child can pack up belongings before lunch/recess.
Please do your best to NOT pick your child up during their lunch/recess time!
6th grade: 11:55 - 12:35
7th grade: 10:43 - 11:33
8th grade: 12:48 - 1:38
Car rider Procedures
Families! It would be very helpful if, when picking up your child(ren) at dismissal in the car line, to PLEASE pull up to the car in front of you. This way, we can maximize the number of students getting into cars and get through the line faster. Thank you!!
Attendance
Parents please send in notes for all absences. Medical notes excuse the absences and parent notes verify the absence. Ten parent notes are the maximum number allowed for the year. After 10 parent notes, a doctor's note will be required. If you have any questions, please email devon_gamble@charleston.k12.sc.us.
Keep Your Child on Track in Middle School: Pay Attention to Attendance
Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students access learning opportunities and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and on the job.
DID YOU KNOW WHAT YOU CAN DO?
- By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
- By 9th grade, attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
- Missing 10%, or 2 days a month, over the course of the school year, can affect a student’s academic success. Make school attendance a priority.
- Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day.
- Help your teen maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
- Try not to schedule dental and other related medical appointments during the school day.
- If your student must stay home because they are sick, make sure they have asked teachers for resources and materials to make up for the missed learning time in the classroom.
School Technology Information You Need to Know...
Students should NOT bring their Chromebook chargers to school. Please charge devices at home each evening. Chargers tend to disappear at school, and we have no way to track them. Students will be responsible for the cost of replacing lost chargers, so please don’t let your student bring the charger to school!
A reminder about the CCSD fee structure for damages and loss of chromebooks:
- Negligent/Accidental Breakage - No charge for first incident per school year $50 per incident for each subsequent event
- Intentional Vandalism - $300.
- Stolen Device - No cost if a police report is provided
- Lost Device - $300
- Lost Charger - $40
Stay in the loop with your child's academics!
