About me
Jared R. Rawlings, Ph.D., serves as Assistant Professor of Instrumental Music Education at The University of Utah School of Music. He received his Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Michigan and has conducted research on the social interactions of youth in music classrooms including bullying, homophobic teasing, peer and school connectedness, and adolescent perceptions of hope. Moreover, he presents at regional, national, and international conferences and is an author on numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and four book chapters. His research on bullying has been nationally recognized by the American Educational Research Association receiving the 2015 Music Education Outstanding Graduate Paper Award and he serves on the Editorial Board of Research Perspectives in Music Education. He has presented dozens of research papers and professional development workshops to in-service teachers and administrators across the United States.
Rawlings’ research focuses on investigating the socio-musical culture of school-based music ensembles while promoting prosocial behaviors with adolescent musicians. He just completed a CDC funded study included a randomized clinical trial of a social emotional learning (SEL) prevention program to reduce bullying and intimate dating violence during adolescence. His study examined the effect of middle school music ensemble participation on the relationship between perceptions of school connectedness, self-reported bullying behaviors and peer victimization. The University of Michigan funded his earlier cross-sectional research on bullying within band classrooms.
