Tēnā koutou katoa
Ngā mihi nui, kia koutou katoa - Warm greetings to you all.
As we quickly approach the conclusion of our first school term for 2024, it has been wonderful to see your children settling into school life and embracing new challenges and opportunities for growth. Throughout the term, our students have enjoyed many learning experiences fostering a spirit of curiosity and discovery. At TPS we are working hard to provide our learners with a strong foundation in Literacy and Numeracy as well as supporting them to be positive contributing members of our school community. The excitement and challenges of Deep Water Safety trips, competing in the TPS swimming sports, the adventures of Year 4 camp, the thrills and spills at the Year 5 Waimarino experience, and the invaluable lessons learned during the Year 6 Leadership Day (plus many more academic, sporting, cultural and leadership opportunities) have all contributed to a term filled with rich experiences and lasting memories. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our school families for your support and partnership in your children's education.
This term Anna Bell-Booth resigned from her position as a school board trustee. Anna's dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment have been instrumental in shaping our school and guiding its growth. While we will miss Anna's presence and leadership, we are grateful for the lasting impact she has made. Thank you Anna for your service to our school; we wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
This term our senior students have been working with Nichola Beamish (Psychotherapist, BOP Therapy Foundation) on a programme aimed at educating and resourcing Year 5/6 students to manage stress (and therefore anxiety). Nichola also ran two staff meetings for us and a parent evening session. This was all fully funded for the school and we are appreciative of the support of the following organisations who support this programme: Lion Foundation, TECT, Acorn Foundation, Pub Charities, Lotteries Commission and Bay Trust.
Next term, as the weather cools, children are allowed to wear plain navy track pants or leggings. We do not sell these items as they are generally available (at a reasonable price) through many local stores. Children are also allowed to wear plain navy or black thermals under their school polo for extra warmth.
We have been out of stock in a few uniform size options lately. We hope to receive a new supply of uniform items in the second week of the school holidays - thank you to those who have waited patiently for these items to arrive. We will notify parents, via email, when the uniforms are available for purchase. We are hoping to open the office to sell these prior to school starting in Term 2. If you have any old uniform items to donate to the school, please drop these into the office.
A very warm welcome to Jimmy Miller, Calverin Jobin, Randhr Rana and Deepson Thapa who have recently started at TPS.
Have a lovely school holiday, and we will look forward to seeing everyone back at school on the 29th April.
Hei kōnei rā

How you can help at home - Structured Literacy
Letter Sounds
These are the sounds we teach at TPS. They are the "kiwi pronunciation". If you are helping your child to sound out words it is important that you use the sounds we use at school.
Term 2 - Learning Conferences
SAVE THE DATE
Learning Conferences will be held on:
Wednesday 22nd May 2024 3:30pm - 6:15pm
Thursday 23rd May 2024 8:00am - 6:45pm
The conferences will be an opportunity to discuss how students have settled back into school, what progress has been made, and to review the goals set at the beginning of the year. These conferences are an important time to reflect on progress made, set new goals and share how you can help your child at home.
We aim for 100% of parents to attend these conferences.
More details to follow nearer the time.
House Winners this Term
Thank you for your support with the Duck Race event. We managed to raise $1500.00. There were no winners from Tauranga Primary School this time, maybe next time.
Our Frosty Friday last week was successful with many children leaving school with a smile on their faces. Next term we will sell slices of pizza for lunch on Wednesday 15th May and Friday 21st June.
The FOTS are excited to host our second quiz night at the school hall, on Friday 7th June 2024.
To help make our second quiz night another success, we are looking for sponsors. This includes businesses that can help by sponsoring a table, sponsoring a quiz round or contributing to our growing number of raffle and auction items.
There are great advertising options for each level of sponsorship! If you would like more information please don't hesitate to reach out to Theresa (theresa.barn3s@gmail.com) to snap up your tables and quiz rounds.
Not only will our Midwinter Christmas-themed Quiz Night be an evening filled with joy and laughter, but it will also be an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on our school community. We are excited to announce that all proceeds from the event will go towards funding more activity equipment for the students at Tauranga Primary School. By participating in the Quiz Night and generously contributing to this cause, you will be directly supporting the physical health and well-being of our students.
Prepare to put your knowledge to the test, team up with friends and family, and compete for the ultimate glory as Quiz Night champions. Mark your calendars and gather your brightest minds because Tauranga Primary School's Quiz Night is going to be the highlight of the year!
Book a whole table of 8 for $240. Grab your friends, family, or colleagues and reserve your exclusive spot, ensuring you can enjoy the festivities together.
Tickets will be on sale soon.

Safer speeds around our school
Safer speeds around our school
Tauranga City Council is seeking feedback on a plan to reduce speed limits to 30km/h in our city centre and near schools and some marae, to make it easier for people to move around and stay safe.
Some of these reduced speed limits will be in place 24/7, but most will be variable speed limits, which means they will only apply during peak times such as school drop-off and pick-up times.
Sixteen schools in Tauranga already have variable 40km/h speed limits – these are also proposed to change to 30km/h. It may simply be a single road that runs past the school gate, or a slightly wider area that includes high-use areas.
To find out more about the speed management plan and take a survey, visit https://letstalk.tauranga.govt.nz/projects/safer-speeds. The survey is open now until 5:00pm, Friday 3 May. Council staff will also be out and about at local markets over the next few weekends if you have any questions or would prefer to give your feedback on paper, or in person. Details on the web page.
Ngā mihi,
Sean
