Principal's Note
Hello SGCS families,
We've had a busy few weeks at school! A big thanks to Ms. Niemi for organizing the Spelling Bee and to Ms. Brann for organizing the Battle of the Books!
It is time for our annual School Climate and Connectedness Survey. This is an opportunity for famlies to give us feedback on how we are doing. It takes just a few minutes, please click here to fill it out. 3rd-5th grade students will fill it our during counseling. Thanks in advance for filling it out!
Next week is Parent/Teacher Conferences! We are a little late in scheduling them this year as we were waiting to hear whether or not we had to make up our Snow Day from January. The Department of Eduation & Early Development granted us a waiver so that we are able to have P/T Conferences as scheduled. No school next Thursday (2/15) and Friday (2/16). Teachers will be in touch to schedule conferences.
In partnership,
Stacy Diouf

JSD Needs your input!
In case you haven't heard, the JSD School Board is looking at reconfiguring our school structure. There are five models that are curently being considered. Four of the five models include a significant change in the elementary school model. In all models sixth graders attend elementary school. In four of the models, elementary schools are "paired" and one school is a PreK-3rd grade school and the other schools is a 4th-6th grade school. This would mean Sayeik: Gastineau and Harborview would be paired and one of our schools would be PreK-3rd and one of our schools would be for 4th-6th graders. We encourage you to and participate in the conversation. You can share your thoughts via the Survey (see button below), or during public comment at next week's meeting. You can also email board members at schoolboard@juneauschools.org
Last week our school community showed up in force at the School Board's Public to represent our schools' needs. The next School Board meeting is Tuesday, February 13, at 6:00 p.m. in the JDHS Library.
Battle of the Books
Our 5th grade team placed SECOND at last night's District Battle - congratulations to Canon Cryderman, Nehir Caf, Ayla Teske, and Riley Swanson
Next up is tonight's District Battle of the Books for 3rd/4th grade, which will be held otnight at the DHMS Library:
3/4th grade, Wednesday 2/7 @6:00--Avery Barnaby, Ona Eckerson, and Ayla Henry
Book Fair
The library is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair February 12-16th! This is a fundraising event for our library that gives students access to a wide selection of inexpensive books (along with journals, bookmarks, posters, and writing tools).
We need volunteers during library classes to help make the book fair go smoothly. Please email Ms. Brann (diana.brann@juneauschools.org) to sign up for a volunteer slot. Volunteers will help with tasks such as helping students find books, reading to students, helping with wish lists, or helping with the register.
Activate an e-Wallet for your student(s), a cashless account that you can set up ahead of time! It is easy to set up by visiting our book fair homepage here . Look for the e-Wallet button at the bottom of the page. For a video with more information, go here
**A new e-Wallet must be set up for each fair. If your child had $ left over from our fall fair you should have received a gift card from Scholastic. These can be easily converted into a new e-wallet by going to our book fair website.
If you would like to contribute to our school wide book fund so that every child can buy a book please add to the Book Fairy's E-Wallet account. *Although it says 3rd grade, $ will be used for every grade.*
