NRWHS December 2017 Newsletter
Mission: To prepare each student for a successful future
Hard Work, Great Talent, and Compassionate Giving
I hope that this message finds you well. With Thanksgiving behind us, we are now well into the second quarter; in fact, we conclude the 15th week of school on Friday, December 15. Students should be working to finish any outstanding assignments in advance of this date. Progress reports will be sent home in the coming week to give parents and students a glimpse of second quarter progress. Upon our return from the holiday break, the next round of interim assessments – the midterms – will not be far off. Midterms are scheduled for the week of January 22.
Students recently received their results from the first round of interim assessments which were administered during the week of November 6. I encourage you to engage your child in a conversation about what he or she learned from the assessments. These assessments are designed to provide both teachers and students with information about what content needs to be revisited. Our teachers have been working together to analyze the assessment results in order to identify learning needs, and they will be modifying future lessons accordingly. The results of the first round of interim assessments, by course, appear later in this newsletter.
We would like to thank everyone who attended our annual art exhibit and winter concert on December 6. It was a wonderful showcase of artistic talent. We’re very proud of our art and music students! We would also like to thank everyone who attended our College and Career Night on December 4.
While our students continue to focus on their academic course work, I also want to be sure to acknowledge some great work being done outside the classroom. Many of our students have been contributing to efforts that are grounded in our school values of respect, responsibility, kindness, and safety. Several students contributed to our annual toy drive, coordinated by Mrs. Amy Johnson, and many others are currently contributing to the annual food drive, coordinated by Mrs. Cathy Peterson. In addition, a group of students have been working to share messages of kindness and respect in Forum. Bravo to these students for promoting kindness and respect!
Thank you for your continued support. I hope you all enjoy a warm and rewarding holiday season with family and friends.
- Brian Read, Principal
Congrats to Our New National Honor Society Members!
On Thursday November 2nd, NRW held our 43rd National Honor Society Induction. In order to become a member, each student must demonstrate outstanding qualities in the four ideals that the organization upholds. The four ideals of National Honor Society are: Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service. They must have a minimum GPA of 90 which must be maintained in order to be a member along with attending bi-weekly meetings, participating in community service events and must complete 25 hours of community service independently. Students being inducted into NHS this year from the left are Abby Loperfido, Connor Leous, Chynna Plantz, Katie Frazer, Emily Graham, Shealyn Shattuck, and Drew Fowler. Congratulations to these amazing individuals! The Senior NHS members did a fantastic job hosting this year’s Induction ceremony: Nikki D’Aurizio, Triniti Boykin, Kelsie Fischette, Bay Batzold, Lili Chavez, Jake Synder, Kylee Mendat, Kalen Bjergam and Taylor LaValley.
Join the LIFT Program!
The Lift program offers daily 3-5 pm learning opportunities! To see what is being offered this week, check the schedule in the main office. Transportation is available home at 5 pm upon request. To sign up for the Lift program, see Mrs. Johnson in Room 111.
NRWHS Hosts Another Successful Blood Drive
National Honor Society sponsored a Red Cross Blood Drive on November 27th. 30 students came out to Donate and the Red Cross was able to collect 22 units of blood. NHS will be hosting another blood drive on Thursday April 19th. The blood drive is open to the public and we look forward to your help donating blood in April to help us reach our goal of at least 24 units. Students who donate blood qualify to win a scholarship from the Red Cross which will be given at the end of the school year. The more blood that we can raise from our community the more scholarships we can earn. NHS is very thankful to all of the people who came out to donate.
Congrats to Our Students of the Month!

Great Job, Math Students!
The math department would like to recognize the following students who continuously go above and beyond in their math courses! These students take responsibility for their learning and initiative to do well! They regularly ask questions, stay after for extra help, and take advantage of opportunities to correct their work or receive extra credit. Thank you for your dedication and keep up the great work!
