Hard To Be A Grown-Up
Next, the students had to calculate gross monthly income, calculate all tax deductions, then figure out their net monthly income.
After that, I let them go shopping for a car. They loved it, but it was a real eye opener for some of them. Some kids went quickly from a fancy sports car to a used car. They used an auto loan calculator link to figure out their monthly payment. I let them have a $2,000 down payment, and gave them 3% interest (because they have good credit).
Today they started looking for an apartment. For the purposes of this activity, they have to live in an apartment, so I gave them a link to all the apartments in Houston. Turns out they LOVE looking at floor plans. I wish you could be in the classroom with me to listen to all the fabulous (and sometimes hilarious) conversations.
Tomorrow, they are going to start figuring out how much they will need for utilities and food.
One boy asked if they could have a roommate. I said, "Yes, it's called a wife". They've all decided to be single.
