HES Newsletter Week of April 6
The New Normal
Hello Houston Families,
We are all experiencing a "new normal" right now. We all - teachers, students, parents and administrators- have had to adjust to a new way of living and a new way of learning. I want to commend the HES Tiger Family for completing two weeks of online learning. Way to go Tigers!
If you were unable to pick up your child's workbooks, know that all of those assignments also have digital access. You will receive the appropriate links. Information will be posted here https://sites.google.com/lancasterisd.org/lancasterisdlearningplan/home
While LISD has provided a week of assignments, only one assignment per content area will be due to your teacher. Teachers will provide you with details in their weekly newsletters on Mondays by 8:30 am. Completed student assignments are due to teachers on Fridays by 4 pm. You will be able to view your child's grades via the Parent Portal weekly.
It is so important that we stay connected during this time. Please, join us for morning announcements Monday-Friday. Teachers are sharing the link via their Class Dojo. You can also subscribe to our Youtube page to get alerts. Additionally, you will receive updates from HES on Twitter @HESLancaster or on FaceBook at Houston ES Lancaster. You can also follow me @totstevenson on Twitter.
Many of our teachers are planning and parenting as we adhere to our state's stay at home guidelines. Please, continue to be patient as our staff members transition into at-home-learning. Teachers have planned times to "see" students during Zoom or Google Meet sessions. If possible, please allow your children to participate. This allows students to stay connected to their classmates and teachers in a way that's helpful to student morale and student academic success. We will continue to highlight #WEBOLearning as we continue this journey.
In this together,

A Message from Lifetouch
The continued spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the US and around the world is causing previously unimaginable concerns for you, your students and all families within your community. At Lifetouch, the well-being of our valued customers and employees is our highest priority.
We imagine you had been looking forward to this season, with spring activities ramping up and students returning to classes after Spring Break. Instead, we are all experiencing an uncertainty day-to-day, not knowing exactly what the remainder of the school year will look like. Therefore, Lifetouch must at this time regretfully inform our partner schools that all scheduled photography for the remainder of this school year has been cancelled.
We are aware of the restrictions Dallas county has put into place with the "stay at home" and "shelter in place" ordinance and our office is in Dallas county. At this time all pictures are being diverted to our lab and distribution is halted. The situation is changing every day and the process is changing as well. Just know that we will get your pictures to you as soon as safely possible.
Lifetouch is committed to helping to flatten the curve of COVID-19, in part by enabling me and other sales and service professionals to work remotely from our homes, where we can still be easily reached to answer your questions and provide the partnership and service you expect from our team. We will continue to be available and in contact with you as the situation evolves. In the meantime, we share our best wishes for your safety and well-being and that of your families and the school community.
Take care and stay safe out there!

Free Educational Websites for Home
Sometimes screen time is a necessity if we have children at home and work we need to do. Here are three apps that make screen time a learning time:
- CodeMonkey: a game-based education program that teaches children to code. It comes with a membership fee, but there's a free 14-day trial that doesn't require a credit card.
- BrainPop: Online learning across subject areas for children in kindergarten through middle school and ELL learning for all age groups. Free.
- Khan Academy: Online learning in math, science, and literacy for all age groups. Standards-aligned. Free.
- BrainPop: Fun, interactive educational activities for all ages and all subject areas
- Scholastic Learn at Home: Interactive learning journeys for all ages.
