LISD TECH Center Times
The week of Monday, March 23, 2020
Hello Students!
We are all experiencing this unprecedented new normal for the next few weeks. The point of this newsletter is to reach out to you and let you know that we are thinking of you. All of our email addresses can be found on the TECH Center website (https://www.lisd.us/lisd-tech-center/), so reach out to us if you need something or just want to check-in with any of us or your instructor. This newsletter is also filled with resources that you might find useful along with some student and instructor competition including PRIZES! Although we have been given a difficult situation, it is what you make out of this that can change lives.
We hope you find these resources and ideas helpful as you are home. We hope you continue to stretch yourself and increase your knowledge. Please know that the resources provided by your instructors are not required, but we hope you take advantage of them and just know that we are thinking of you!
We want to hear from you! Share a picture of how you are incorporating your CTE program at home.
Send to your instructor or Mrs. Heath (Jenny.Heath@lisd.us).
Mrs. Ritchey is just a ZOOM away!
If you would like to set up a video chat with Mrs. Ritchey, please create a Zoom account. Zoom accounts are free and once you have an account, you need to email Mrs. Ritchey (sue.ritchey@lisd.us) and ask for a Zoom Video Chat meeting. It's that easy and she is happy to connect with you!

The TECH Center Carp Tank Competition

Student that creates the BEST 30 second infomercial on how great the TECH center is will win a $25 gift card to Spotted Cow. All entries submitted to Jenny Heath (jenny.heath@lisd.us) by April 5 will be judged by the TECH Center Leadership Team.
LISD Artwork for the Main Entrance Competition
The individual that designs a 6 foot by 6 foot max. work of art that would be weatherproof and appropriate for the brick wall coming into the TECH Center that can be displayed next to the existing art will win a $25 Spotted Cow card. IF the design is chosen and noted as worthy for the wall, the design may be funded and designed as part of a TECH Center course. The winner may be recognized only as best, yet IF feasible it will be produced and mounted on the wall with the designer name displayed for all to see.
Student Organization Update
In most years, this is a very exciting time for you and your instructors as many of you get the opportunity to display your talents in competitive events across the state. While the majority of you have competed at some level whether it be in a local, district, regional, or state competition, several of you have yet to showcase your talents.
The current events that we are faced with are truly heartbreaking on multiple levels; so many of you have dedicated countless hours to your student organization through coming in after school to practice, staying up late to get some extra studying, and making last-minute preparations for competitions. Please know that each and every one of you that have competed in your respective student organization, we are truly proud of your accomplishments and the representation that you displayed on behalf of the LISD TECH Center. Please see below for the latest correspondence from each respective Student Organization.

Are you interested in science or agriculture? Check out these ideas from our FFA Advisors!
You can help to contribute to the world of scientific discovery from the comfort of your own home. SciStarter is a database that you can use to search many fun citizen science projects. You can choose the topic such as animals, chemistry, food, physics, and more. For example, ISee Change allows you to upload photos of the outdoors to track when flowers bloom or leaves appear on trees. Foldit is an app that allows you to play with different protein structures to help researchers determine how new proteins might look in 3D. Stall Catchers allows you to play a role in Alzheimer’s research by determining which images might show blockages in blood vessels in the brain. All of this can help advance the field of science, and it does not cost anything.
iCEV online curriculum is freely available to students. This includes many online certification opportunities in fields like agriculture, health science, architecture, business, safety, and more. There is also career exploration to help you choose a career that is best matched to your interests. Contact your instructor to help you set up your iCEV account.
March is reading month! The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has some really interesting articles on sciencemag.org. All of the studies have been peer-reviewed, which means that they come from credible sources. The website is updated daily with short articles that summarize longer studies in scientific journals. Some of the topics include bioluminescence in sharks, a palace of fossilized mammoth bones found in Russia, and new technology to help drones avoid collisions with birds.
Ducks Unlimited Ecology Conservation Management Certification course is available to YOU!! Goto www.icevonline, login, click code PILGILHO001 (please note the last three digits are numerical-zero, zero, one. If you type three letter O’s you will not gain access). Are you interested in helping the elderly?
Think about the elderly by...
Students! As you are aware, many local nursing homes and hospitals are not allowing visitors at this time for safety to that population. I encourage you to write a letter or send a card to a grandparent, neighbor, or family friend who may be in a nursing home, hospital, or even quarantined in their house right now. Days can get long and lonely. A letter from you would brighten their day! Things you could talk about:
- Activities you are doing at home during this time off
- Exciting activities/learning that you had at the TECH Center
- Summer plans/jobs you may be hopeful to get
- Career Plans
- Just say ”Hi” and that you are thinking of them
You could have an younger sibling color a picture to send with your letter/card! They would love to hear from you!
