May Newsletter
Thank you to the Lincoln PTO, parent volunteers, families, and staff members for all of your work and support for the PTO Auction! This was a special evening and everyone enjoyed the event. Thank you also to Mrs. Fulkerson, the Lincoln PTO, parent volunteers, students, and staff for an outstanding Earth Day! The students shared with me last week that they loved all of the stations and activities. I also appreciate the efforts of Lincoln families and students with the Tree of Life dinner last week! We served 74 dinners to help local families.
We are looking forward to the Strawberry Festival at Wegmeyer Farm on May 18 and 19! Please see the PTO newsletter information and the sign up link if you are able to volunteer for this event.
Thank you for helping Lincoln with our attendance and our current chronic absenteeism attendance rate is 7.7%. This is good progress from a few months ago and about the same rate as last year. Two years ago, our rate was 2.5%. We appreciate your efforts with planning family trips around the school calendar and a reminder that the school calendar for next year is online for planning future trips. Thank you for helping Lincoln improve our attendance during the year. Our next PTO meeting will be held on Monday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m. online and all Lincoln parents are invited to attend.
During the month of May, students in third, fourth, and fifth grades will take SOL assessments on the dates listed on the calendar below. A reminder that each assessment is untimed. One resource for practicing the format of the assessments is the Test Nav practice link below. Parents do not need a username or password. Click the Virginia Practice Item link on the bottom of the page and then the non-audio version of the practice test.

The Online Pre-Registration portal for kindergartners and new LCPS students is open! This new student registration portal for the 2024-2025 school year opened on Feb. 1, 2024. The LCPS student registration process involves two steps: online pre-registration and in-person registration appointments.
During the online pre-registration, parents/guardians create ParentVue accounts, upload the required documents and provide information about their child. Parents/guardians are advised to determine their zoned school and to contact that school with any questions. Once pre-registration has been submitted, the school registrars will contact the parents/guardians within five days to schedule a registration appointment. Parents/guardians may also contact the zoned school directly.
We are looking forward to seeing families during our upcoming events! On Tuesday, May 14, we will host a K-2 musical at 6:00 p.m. On Tuesday, May 21, Lincoln will continue our special tradition with our Talent Show at 6:30 p.m. Please email me at Dave.Michener@lcps.org or call me at (540) 751-2430 if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Dave Michener

The Lincoln Elementary Auction on April 19 at Endhardt Vineyards was a fantastic event! Thank you so much to all of our volunteers, class parents and our teachers who donated experiences and art work. On the topic of fundraising, have you ever wondered why we raise funds and where the money goes? Click here to find out!
The kids enjoyed celebrating Earth Day this past Wednesday, April 24th. Thank you to our families for donating the recyclable supplies we needed and to our many volunteers!
Please join us in celebrating our AMAZING staff during Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week beginning on Monday, May 6th through Friday, May 10th. Thank you to all of the families who have already volunteered to help make this a special week! Please take a brief moment to send your child’s teacher a note expressing your gratitude. We will kick off the week with LES Chalk the Walk Play Date (5/5) on Sunday from 2-3pm to decorate the walkways with inspirational messages for the staff. Supplies provided. We will end with Freaky Friday Spirit Day (5/10)! Students will dress like teachers & teachers like students. Don’t go buy anything… students can also rock their teacher’s favorite colors or alumni gear instead: Beasley - navy blue / Bigney - navy blue, Penn State / Lanigan - blue / Mangiapanella - blue / Reed - navy or purple, Dallas Cowboys / Silver - navy / Washko - pink.
Wegmeyer Farms is sponsoring the inaugural Lincoln Strawberry Festival this year on May 18th and 19th. Lincoln Elementary will be hosting a pancake breakfast at the festival both mornings, and Wegmeyer Farms will be donating the proceeds to our school! We need a lot of adult and older student (grades 4-5) volunteers to make this a success. Please click here to see how you can help.
After School Enrichment: Our Spring programs are underway and later spring signups are available! We have a PE Games program on Mondays that started on April 29th for grades 2-5 priced at only $20! Save the Date: Our next LES Spirit Night will be at Monk’s BBQ and Tipped Cow Creamery on Thursday, June 13 from 4 to 9p.m. This is during the last week of school, so it’s the perfect time for a year-end celebration that also supports Lincoln! Be sure to invite your friends and family too! You can either dine-in or carry-out, just be sure to mention Lincoln Elementary.
PTO Openings: We have a number of PTO roles that will be opening up for the 24-25 school year. That means we need your help! The following roles will be open: Parent Teacher Liaison, Yearbook Coordinator, PTBoard Administrator and Spirit Wear Coordinator. You can find more information here and full details about the positions on PTBoard. Please contact Jen Hergenroeder if you are interested in any of these positions or other board roles!
PTO Meeting: Our next PTO meeting will be a virtual meeting on May 13th from 7-8pm. To join the meeting, go to: www.tinyurl.com/LESPTOMeeting. In May the students in each grade level will be finishing learning about different careers in SchooLinks. All classes will be doing an end of year recap and review our accomplishments this school year and discuss the next grade level. Fifth grade students will focus on transitioning to middle school. My nephew who is currently at UVA who went to Blue Ridge and Loudoun Valley is going to visit and talk about his experience going through both schools and answering questions for the students.
The counseling department has a wonderful new resource that has had positive feedback. The resource is Parent Guidance https://parentguidance.org/ The program offers parent coaching, On-Demand courses, along with helping find outside therapist.

May in Art is going to be a blast! Kindergarten and 1st grade will be working on foreground, middle, and background. Second grade will be finishing their underwater self-portraits and then will be making a special 3d project out of egg cartons! Third grade is designing their own city inspired by the artist James Rizzi! Fourth grade will be using oil and chalk pastels to make a symmetrical bug and then we will focus on one-point perspective drawing. Fifth grade is finishing their chalk pastel succulents inspired by Georgia O'Keefe and then they will be learning to sew and make a fun pillow sculpture! I can't wait to see all of these projects from the talented Lincoln artists!

Library
Mrs. Dillon
Lessons in the library in May will focus on SOL literacy and reference skill review games, as well as book recommendations and makerspace activities.
The last day for students to check books out from the library will be May 31st, although if students need a title they will be able to access the library until the last day of school. I will be sending out overdue lists during the last weeks of school to help remind everyone to look for books that need to be returned.
Get ready for our spring book fair! The fair will be open Monday-Friday, May 13th-17th. Students may shop during library classes and after school until 3:15. Thank you to the parent volunteers that make this possible! For those of you that would like to shop with your students but cannot come earlier, It will also be open Tuesday the 14th until 6:00 pm. This is the night of the K-2 musical. You can also shop the fair online or sign your student up for an eWallet at https://www.scholastic.com/bf/lincolnelementaryschool22
I want to thank The Nature Generation for their continued support of our library. In addition to bringing the popular author/illustrator Henry Cole to Lincoln for an assembly, they donated an environmental themed book to each student at Lincoln. NatGen promotes environmental stewardship in several ways including celebrating literature. They announced their annual Green Earth Book Awards on Earth Day. This was my fourth year on the judging panel for the children’s fiction category, and the titles nominated just keep getting better! You can see the list of winners at http://www.natgen.org/ .

Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper into a sculpture without using glue, tape, or scissors. This may seem like a difficult task, but it is entirely possible to fold paper into very sophisticated and beautiful designs.
To begin, you need a square sheet of paper. Origami paper is thin, and often colored on both sides. You can certainly purchase specific origami paper, but you can also just turn any sheet of printer or notebook paper into a square using a ruler or by folding and cutting.
Click HERE for instructions to fold some spring inspired designs - a butterfly, a fish, and a fox. Origami is TOUGH to master, your child will likely need to work together with a grown up the first few times to figure out the folds. While challenging, it can be so rewarding to have a cool 3D creation made out of a flat piece of paper! There are oodles of origami tutorials on YouTube and the library also has a number of books you can check out to try out different designs. Happy folding!
