WICORIZING Memorial Day Lessons
Ideas for Incorporating Writing
Ideas for Collaboration and Organization
The purpose is to work together in groups to make connections to the history behind Memorial Day.
Ideas for Critical Reading and Inquiry
The Wall, by Eve Bunting uses imagery and inferencing to describe a visit to the Vietnam Memorial through the eyes of a young boy. This book is appropriate for primary readers.
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry tells the story of the evacuation of Jews from Nazi-held Denmark during WWII through the perspective of a 10 year old girl. This book is appropriate for intermediate readers.
Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was delivered during the American Civil War at the dedication of the Soldier's National Cemetery. Reading it during Memorial Day would be fitting and appropriate for secondary students as they utilize primary sources. Having students analyze the text in groups and write leveled questions to bring into a Socratic Seminar can increase the rigor.
The poem In Flanders Fields was written during WWI. In it, John McCrae describes the red poppies that grew over the graves of fallen soldiers. Because of It, the remembrance poppy is used during Memorial Day. Students can read and analyze the poem and create a one-pager in response.
Featured WICOR Strategy - Strategies For ALL Students
Reading- Marking the Text
Marking the text is an active reading strategy that asks students to identify information in the text that is relevant to the reading purpose. This strategy has three distinct marks: numbering paragraphs, underlining, and circling. Based on the reading purpose, students will use marking the text to identify information as they read. When students mark texts purposefully, they are actively engaged in meaning making.
