What are Gastric Ulcers?
- A type of peptic ulcer
- Localized area of erosion in the stomach wall
Signs and Symptoms
- Abdominal pain
- Possible bleeding
- Unintentional weight loss
- Nausea/vomiting
- Fatigue
* Sometimes there are no symptoms *
Cause of the Disease
- Gastric acid
- Digestive enzymes
- Other factors that may include bacterial infection
Treatment (methods of)
Non-surgical
- H2 blockers: prevents stomach from making too much acid
- Proton pump inhibitors: blocks cells that produce acid
- Over-the-counter antacids: help neutralize stomach acids
- Cytoprotective agents: protects lining of stomach and small intestine (ex. Pepto-Bismol)
Surgical
- Removal of the entire ulcer
- Taking tissue from another part of the intestines and sewing it over the ulcer site
- Tying off a bleeding artery
- Cutting nerve supply to stomach to reduce production of stomach acids
