Parents can make reading more motivating by letting children choose books and making reading a memorable family event. Here are some tips for getting started!
- Let kids pick out their own books at the library or bookstore.
- Set goals and reward reading.
- Let your kids see you read - maybe the newspaper over a morning coffee, a magazine from the rack in the doctor's office waiting room, or a paperback stuck into your purse or pocket.
- Make reading together fun and memorable by using different voices or using sound effects and motions.
- Create loving associations with books and reading. Reading together is a time for closeness and cuddling!

Counselor's Corner
Coping Skills, Healthy Lifestyles, and Healthy Relationships
Welcome Back!
Mrs. Galvin is back from maternity leave. If you need to be in contact with her, please reach out via email at ckazlow@bcps.org or phone at 443-809-2088.
March Counseling Lessons
During the month of March, the school counselors will go to classrooms to teach lessons on mindfulness. Mindfulness is a great way to practice coping skills and emotional regulation during challenging times. It can help build confidence and relate to uncomfortable moments. The earlier that children are exposed to mindfulness practices, the greater the opportunity they have to cultivate resiliency as they get older.
-Check out this website to learn more about mindfulness for kids:
Career Day
Mrs. Galvin (Kazlow) is in the process of planning another successful career day! If you are interested in participating to come talk about your career with 4th and 5th graders on May 7th, please send an email to ckazlow@bcps.org with your name, student's name, and career. More details to come!
Take a Break Activity
Please note, you will need dice or a dice app for your phone –
Roll the dice as each number you could roll has a corresponding physical activity.
Healthy Habits BINGO
You can have students use the cards to identify a healthy habit or habits they want to commit to and track. Additional healthy habits bingo cards are available online.
Notes from the Nurse
Notes from the Nurse SPRING IS COMING... and so are ALLERGIES!
How can you minimize exposure to seasonal allergy triggers? Take steps to prevent allergies from acting up:
• Have your child wash their hands and face as soon as they come in from playing outside so they do not rub pollen in their eyes and nose. Try gargling to remove pollen from the mouth.
• Dry laundry in the dryer. Since pollen can coat clothing, avoid hanging laundry outside to dry.
• Have your child take their bath at bedtime. This will help with nighttime allergy problems.
• Keep windows in your home and car closed and use air conditioning to filter the air. Make sure the air conditioner is in re-circulating mode.
• Change linen frequently, especially pillowcases. Give over-the-counter allergy medications at home! The school does not give allergy medication for seasonal allergies!
• Nasal steroid sprays, such as Flonase, tend to be the best daily medication to treat allergies.
• Oral medications Cetirizine, Loratadine, and Fexofenadine are three common over-the counter antihistamines commonly used to treat allergies.
