MRHS Mock Trial Team wins preliminary round in competition against Nauset
On Friday the Monomoy Regional High School mock trial team began its participation in the preliminary round of the 2020 Massachusetts Bar Association’s Mock Trial competition with a 96 to 92 victory over Nauset Regional High School.
The team is in the midst of its fifteenth year of participation in the mock trial program sponsored by the Massachusetts Bar Association. The program, now in its 35th year, provides Monomoy students with the opportunity to compete against approximately 130 teams from across the state. Schools are placed into one of 32 geographic regions and compete in three preliminary rounds within their region where teams alternate between arguing the prosecution/plaintiff and defense sides of that year’s assigned case. During the trials, students assume the roles of attorneys and witnesses and their performances are scored by the trial judge. Based on a team’s performance in the preliminary rounds, a winner for each region is determined and the winning teams move on to the championship rounds where an eventual state champion is crowned. Preparation for the competition begins in late October when the case materials are released by the Massachusetts Bar Association. The first trials begin in mid-January and may extend into late March depending on the success of the team. This year’s team is comprised of Sage Barnes, Alison Barrett, Jaymie Buffington, Rory Carpenter, Holly Evans, Kaitlyn Germann, Jenna Greco, Trevor Russell, Lily Ryan, Julie Slade, Amy Hinesley, Charlotte Blute, Darby Carpenter, Isabela McMahon, Yu Shang Zou, Christie Beckley, Tyler Brackett, Samantha Goode, Declan Russell and Chloe Zaloom. The team is assisted in their trial preparation by attorney coach Mark Russell and MRHS teacher Kevin Bates. For additional information on the MBA Mock Trial Program please visit:

Government students participate in "We the People" speech competition
On Saturday January 25th, Monomoy government students traveled to the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the Senate in Boston to participate in the state "We the People" speech competition. Students presented speeches in groups to panels of judges, and answered questions about the Constitution, civics, government and current events. Congratulations to all our students for their work, and especially to Unit 5 members for winning a unit award for their presentations: Mike Hemeon, Lucas Garneau, and Steven Young. Kelsey Olson was also presented with a Civic Virtue award (voted on by her classmates) for her work on behalf of her school class.

February and April Vacations
One of the best ways to research colleges is to visit the campus and take a tour. School vacations are an ideal time to schedule a tour so you can see what student life looks like. If you are traveling or planning a staycation, see if you can check out a local college. Being on a campus is a great experience and will help students as they start to plan life after high school.
