Principal's Message
In recent weeks there have been a number of tragic events that have made headlines in local and regional news at area high schools. In talking with my own kids, I asked is what we read notably different from what they experience in their own schools. Unfortunately, as I suspected, their perceptions were that the descriptions could be for their schools. And in actuality, one of their schools experienced a similar tragedy.
That combined with the recent release of 13 Reasons Why on Netflix has brought concerns about students' mental health to an even greater point of focus. While not to the degree that I have seen at the high school level, I am certain that we students who feel the challenges and pressures of adolescence, school and getting into college. In my experience, I'm not certain if schools mirror the expectations of communities or vice versa. What I can say is it can be a vicious circle with kids caught in the middle.
We wanted to highlight and share our awareness of these issues and ultimately provide parents a tool/resource (see the Student Services Spotlight, below) to engage in conversations with their students. As always, if you or your student need support, please reach out to school staff as they can be a resource, as well.

Diligence
Parenting, in and of itself, is difficult. Parenting while navigating Snapchat, Instagram, text messaging, Xbox, Playstation, Netflix, and You Tube can be a full time job. If you have recently heard your student discussing the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why, please take a minute to read these talking points. Topics such as suicide, depression, and bullying are prevalent in this series and students may be confused and/or disturbed by these issues.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to Student Services.
