Tips on understanding how swim meets work
- All athletes will need to have their upper arms marked with a black sharpie marker prior to getting wet and preferably before coming to the pool. *instructions are further down in the newsletter*
- We want all Marlins to sit together at meets so we have a presence and can find folks if they are not where they are supposed to be.
- SO divisions swimmers by age groups, but not by sex, so you may see girls and guys swimming together.
- An important item to understand is this: in order to get meets done faster, they will run multiple divisions of a race together in the pool-so just because your swimmer may have come in 4th overall, they may actually have won their division! Look for empty lanes separating the divisions.
- All athletes are expected to swim all of their events unless there are extenuating circumstances. We try to have all athletes swim in one relay as well, so please don't leave the meet without checking with your lane coach.
- Swim meets are long...and can be hot and loud. Please dress appropriately and bring activities to do during the wait time.
- Swimmers will be called to a staging area for each event. It is important to pay attention and listen for when they are called.
- When swimmers go to staging, they should have their cap, goggles, a towel, warm ups/t-shirt and deck shoes.
- If you have any questions-please son't hesitate to ask a coach or another parent-we are a family and support each other as such.
- Please display good sportsmanship-you are modeling for all of our swimmers and representing Mecklenburg County.
Bring a sharpie or 2 to the meet
Bring several towels to the meet
Don't forget your swimsuit!
Key Swim Meet Information
What to Bring /Wear to a Swim Meet:
- Swim suit
- Team t-shirt
- Deck shoes
- 2 pairs of goggles
- Swim cap
- 2-3 towels
- Extra clothes including a sweatshirt
- Activities to do during down time
- Water bottle
- Sharpie marker to mark swimmers arm
Please mark all items with athlete name.
Using a black thin sharpie marker, please mark your swimmers upper arm before arriving at the meet (you may also put their information on their forearm so that they are able to read it). You will be emailed their events prior to the meet.
The following is an example showing the athlete name, division, lane and event type. For relays, you can put the order number that they are swimming (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th)
FR=freestyle
BK=backstroke
BR= Breaststroke
FLY= butterfly
IM=individual medley
R=relay
NO DIVE-only if athlete is an in-water start.
Example:
Amy C.
E 2 H3 L6 25 BR
E 12 H27 L3 50 FLY
E 25 H40 L2 25 BK
E 32 H49 L5 100 IM
E 35 H58 L4 R #4 50 FR
The first line shows that Amy C. is swimming in Event 2, Heat 3, lane 6 and the event is 25 yard breast. The 2nd line shows that Amy C. is swimming in Event 12, Heat 27, lane 3 and the event is 50 yard fly.
Be sure to put your swimmer's name at the top so that all those on deck can verify that the correct swimmer is in the correct lane.
You can remove the sharpie ink after the meet with baby oil or spray suntan lotion oil.
