Hornet Enrichment Academy (HEA)
Welcome to the New Setup!
We are CREATING THE WHY!
WHAT IS CREATING THE WHY?
Our staff wants our students to always try to find out why the course work is important, how it connects, and where it could be relevant in the real world! The aim is for students to get more one-on-one time with teachers in class sizes of 15 or less, do more hands-on learning, experience creative and interactive assignments, and engage in project-based learning. Our students will explore and learn more about who they are and how to succeed socially, emotionally, and communicatively in the HRT class, while also receiving direct math and language arts instruction daily!
BENEFITS of the HEA:
- Smaller Class Size = More Time with Teacher
- Hands-on
- Real-world Relevant Connections
- Project-Based Learning
- Development of Lifelong Skills
- Easier Transitions from SG - MS also MS - HS
Focused and Engaged

What's new in the HEA?
We have shifted to a program for grades 7-10 that focuses on being proactive! Additionally, we have created curriculum that includes creative ways to address skill deficiencies, so students can succeed in the classroom and chase their dreams!
We looked for students in grades 7-10 who have struggled:
- Academically
- Behaviorally
- Socially
Matt Irwin - BGHS Assistant Principal
Mr. Irwin is excited about the opportunity to lead the HEA and non-traditional programming. He is in his 7th year here in Beech Grove City Schools. He was a teacher at South Grove for 5 years, a counselor at the BGHS last year, and has been the head wrestling coach at BGCS for the last 5 years. He will still serve as the head wrestling coach for BGCS along with his duties as a BGHS assistant principal. Mr. Irwin is thrilled to have the chance to help serve our students in his new role and is looking forward to helping the staff "Create the Why" for the students.
Sharnita Thomas - HS HEA HRT Teacher
Grant Benefiel - HS HEA English Teacher
Melinda Allen - HS HEA Math Teacher
Sara Wiley - MS HEA Admin Assistant / English Teacher
Mrs. Wiley has been married to her husband, Craig, for 18 years. They have two children. When she's not at BGMS, Mrs. Wiley spends her free time watching her children's sporting events, reading, and listening to Dave Matthews Band or Mumford and Sons.
Chad Mann - MS HEA Math & Mentor Teacher
Mr. Mann has been with BGCS for the past 22 years teaching 7th-grade math. He started his career with BGCS after graduating from Purdue University with a degree in mathematics. He cut his teeth under the tutelage of the one and only Mr. Cahill. Mr. Mann really has taken great pleasure, over the years, of having fun with his students, while they have also had great success in the classroom. He and hIs wife of 15 years, who is also a teacher at South Grove, feel as though they have been very fortunate to work in such a great community!
