System Outages
Because Google Classroom and Zoom are both web-based programs, we do not anticipate any interruption in our daily learning. AAs always, we thank you for your grace and understanding if issues are encountered.
I will provide updates as they become available and you can also visit the District Website for additional information/updates.
Here is an email message from Mr. Gutman Sunday evening regarding the system outage:
Good Evening Walled Lake Team,
I want to take this opportunity to share information about our system outage and let you know what we know at this time.
We have confirmed that our systems have been hacked. Upon suspicion of this we engaged, immediately, with a team of forensic experts, a cyber counterintelligence consulting firm, and a law firm that specializes in cyber attacks. The District has a cyber security insurance policy which provides us access to these and other experts in the field. We have also alerted authorities.
No time has been wasted in exploring exactly what this means to our systems and data. The team of experts has been working around the clock to gain as much information as possible about this attack, as well as to determine how and when we will be able to fully restore our systems.
What we have learned is that the attackers were successful in gaining access to our system and that there is the possibility that credential and other information was available to them. Unfortunately, we do not have any specifics at this point but we will certainly keep you updated as we receive additional information.
While systems will be brought back over the course of this next week, it is not yet known when we will have access to those systems.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this this disturbing event.

Oakley Park STRONG!
When you listen to others share their thoughts about returning to in-person learning, I respectfully ask that you show empathy and grace to each other. Remember, this is a very personal decision for each family. As we move forward, I know there are many questions and concerns. One question I have heard many times this week is in regards to teacher assignment. There is no simple answer to this very important question. The decision about teacher placement will be made by our district administrators factoring in several variables: the number of students in My Path, Our Path and those returning to in-person learning (based on parent survey responses). When completing the survey, please understand you are indicating the "Path" for your student not an actual teacher.
In the coming week, the district and I will share additional information with you so you can make an informed decision and prepare accordingly. Please plan to attend the K-5 Return to Learn Parent Info Session, Tuesday , October 13th at 7:00 pm (please see additional information regarding this meeting in the message below from Mr. Gutman).
The health and safety of our community - our kids, our staff, and our families - continues to be my top priority. For the last few months, I have been both supporting virtual learning AND preparing for a potential return to in-person learning. During this coming week, I look forward to working with a large group of our staff who have volunteered to help finalize plans and procedures that will best support your students throughout the school day. I look forward to watching many of our Owls walk through the doors of our school for the first time since March 13th. Please be assured that regardless of the path you choose for your child at this time, we are ALL Oakley Park Owls and I am here to support and serve!

A Message from Superintendent Gutman
Dear WLCSD Parents:
As you know, the WLCSD Board of Education approved an Extended Continuity of Learning plan that includes the option for K-5 students to return in-person, all day, five days per week, beginning to transition back the first week of November. The original health and safety plans and protocols created by the Return to Learn subcommittee will be implemented, including students and staff wearing masks. Elementary parents will choose from in-person, Our Path, and My Path.
Further, Pre-K to 26 students with IEPs in self-contained classrooms will have the option to return in person. These programs include ECSE, EI, CI, ASD, SXI, Cross Categorical, and Adult Transitions. Additionally, students with IEPs, but not in one of these programs, can be referred to in-person drop-in services by the IEP team; these drop-in services will be housed at Geisler Middle School.
A K-5 Return to Learn Parent Information Meeting is set for Tuesday, Oct. 13 from 7-8 p.m. via Zoom and it will be live streamed so as many parents who are able to can participate. Parents may also submit questions in advance. To participate and submit questions, review the information in this link: K-5 Return to Learn Parent Info Session. This meeting will be recorded so parents who cannot view it live may watch it at their convenience. Many parents already know what selection they will make. For parents who want to make their selection now, you may complete the surveys below, by Friday, Oct. 16.
- K-5 Return to Learn Survey (Please complete one survey for each of your elementary school children.)
- P-12-Special Services Return to Learn Survey (Please complete this survey for children who are in self-contained Special Services programs.)
Thank you for the many questions we have received regarding the K-5 and P-12 Special Services Return to Learn option. We are currently compiling and responding to the many, many questions we have received. A Frequently Asked Questions document will be available soon. After the parent surveys are completed, we will send parents who select the in-person option an In-Person Safety Etiquette form to sign.
I assure you that your concerns are our concerns as well, and we will work with you to make this safe and educationally beneficial for all. While additional communication will be forthcoming, please review this PPE Return to Learn Video as well as the original Return to Learn plan. We will be sharing the Oakland County Health Department guidance that we plan to implement when COVID-19 cases arise. As always, all information will be on our website in the Return to Learn link. We appreciate your continued support.
Respectfully,
