2015 Palmetto State Gender Institute
Saturday, January 24th, 2015
Oakland Elementary School (Spartanburg 2)
8:30am-2:00pm
In recent years, much attention has been given to ways in which boys and girls learn. To address these unique preferences, both co-ed and single-gender teachers must develop the necessary skills to ensure the success of all students. The conference, scheduled for Saturday, January, 24th, 2015 serves as our state's premiere professional development opportunity in gender-specific approaches to learning. The conference will feature numerous break-out sessions lead by colleagues from across our state.
If you are interested in attending, please let K.Barber know.

HEALTH ADVISORY COUNCIL AT PES
The district has mandated all schools to have a Health Advisory Council. The purpose of the council is to develop and implement wellness information and physical activities for the entire school population...faculty, staff, and students.
Mrs. Ellis has agreed to chair this council. Upon our return from winter break, she would like to get started working with this committee. Your ideas are welcomed! At the end of the year, a report must be sent to the district detailing the initiatives we participated in at our school.
If you are willing to be on this committee, please email Daleen Ellis of your interest. The committee will meet once a month at our school. We look forward to hearing what great ideas you would like to see happen at Pontiac. Merry Fitness and a Healthy New You!!

How does the flu spread?
Flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. Flu viruses also may spread when people touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their mouth, eyes, or nose. Many other viruses spread these ways too. People infected with flu may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick. That means you may be able to spread the flu to someone else before you know you are sick as well as while you are sick. Young children, those who are severely ill, and those who have severely weakened immune systems may be able to infect others for longer than 5-7 days.
TIPS TO REMEMBER
Cough or sneeze into the elbow area, and not into your hands.
If you or your child gets sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you (or your child) stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.
Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol based hand rub.
Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
Routinely clean frequently touched objects and surfaces, including doorknobs, keyboards, and phones, to help remove germs.
Everyday preventive actions can help slow the spread of germs that can cause many different illnesses and may offer some protection against the flu.
Note: Please remember if a student is coughing a lot, and you have an "extra cough drop", please don't share it with any of your students. Cough drops are considered a medication, and requires a parent permission slip for the health room to dispense it. If a student develops a bad reaction from an ingredient inside the cough drop this can create a lot of problems.
