The Story of My Rocks
By: Kamryn Schindler
THREE TYPES OF ROCKS
Igneous Rock
- They are formed either inside a volcano or outside a volcano
- Intrusive and Extrusive rocks are the two main types and intrusive rocks are formed inside a volcano and extrusive rocks are formed outside a volcano
Sedimentary Rock
- They are formed at or near the Earths surface
- The main types are clasic, bioclastic, and crystalline, clastic is formed by of many sediments cemented together, bioclastic is formed by shells or plant materials, and crystalline is formed by chemicals in the ocean water.
Metamorphic Rock
- Metamorphic rocks are formed deep within the earth
- The two types of metamorphic are foliated and nonfoliated rocks.
- Foliated rocks are formed by alignment of minerals.
Gabbro
- The crystal size is 1mm to 10mm.
- The texture is coarse and non-vesicular.
- Darker color
- Higher density
- Density Mafic
Limestone
- Texture is crystalline or bioclastic.
- Grain size is very course.
- The composition is calcite.
- Precipitates of a biologic origin.
Marble
- Grain size is fine to coarse.
- Composition is calcite or dolomite.
- Metamorphism of limestone or dolostone.
- Regional or contact.
