I can't believe that we are already into the 3rd marking period. Please be sure to take a look at the Language Arts and Math Expectations for the 3rd Marking Period. In math, your child will need to be able to count by 1's to 75, recognize and write numbers 0-18, know 3 of the 4 coins, and be able to solve simple addition and subtraction problems using concrete objects. In Language Arts, your child will need to be able to recognize 50 + letters, know the difference between fiction and nonfiction, read 45 sight words, and write 10 of the 21 starred sight words independently. Also, don't forget that by the end of kindergarten, your child will need to be able to read at a level 4. Take a look at the number on the books that your child is bringing home and see what level they are currently reading at.
I am also very excited this marking period because during our professional development day, I learned about some new ways to keep parents updated about things that are happening in the classroom. The first tool I learned about was Twitter. I have set up a Twitter page for our classroom. The Twitter page will be used as a way to get updates and to see what is going on in the classroom. Please consider following me on Twitter @kinderkidsrule. One of the other tools that I learned about is called SeeSaw. SeeSaw is a safe place for students to document their learning and to learn how to use technology. Each child gets their own page where they will share what they are doing in school. When your child shares something on SeeSaw, if you sign up, you will be notified and can check it out. I will be sending home papers like I did for ABCmouse with directions on how to sign up. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about anything, please let me know.
Language Arts
In Language Arts, we have been talking about fiction stories. Fiction means that the story is not real. In a fiction story, there are always characters (who was in the story), a setting (where the story took place), and a plot (what was the problem and the solution in the story). We have also talked a lot about retelling a story and sequencing. A student should be able to listen to or read a story and talk about what happened in the story by starting at the beginning and telling everything that happened by putting it in the correct order. Please have your child practice doing this at home. This will be a beneficial reading strategy for your child as he or she gets to the higher reading levels.
Math
The students have been learning how to measure with both standard and nonstandard forms of measurement, they have learned how to use tally marks, and they have learned how to add and subtract on the calculator. As I mentioned above, by the end of the 3rd marking period, your child will need to be able to solve simple addition and subtraction problems. We have been practicing adding and subtracting simple problems and will be talking about it a lot more this marking period. However, it would be a great idea to work on adding and subtracting at home as well because it can be a hard concept for some children. There are some great addition and subtraction games on ABCmouse, ABCya, and Starfall.
