From Mrs. Barry:
Throughout the last 8 weeks, we have been operating under the norms of patience, flexibility, and positivity. Never has that been more necessary than this week! As Texas is opening and Houston is following suit, questions about the future of what we think of as "normal school" still remain. Will we have summer school, and if so, what will it look like and who will attend? What will school look like in the fall? Will we be face-to-face or virtual, or something blended?
As someone who wants to plan and be able to share details, having to say, "I don't know," has been very frustrating. I'm with all of you in wanting answers. I am also with all of you in wanting to ensure we make the best possible decisions for the health and welfare of our students, staff, and families. In the background, SBISD and MWE are planning for any eventuality. We are looking at what has been working and what hasn't worked. We are collaborating to find the best ways of truly instructing children. We are reflecting on how we can best help our students - and our families - in this environment. Most importantly, we are discussing how we do whatever is decided and continue to keep our students safe and healthy.
Yet, with all this planning, I still don't have many formal answers to give you - and sometimes the answers I have come with a condition that they might change as situations develops. Please be assured that I will continue to communicate with you throughout these next few weeks and summer, as we learn more about what the future holds. Feel free to reach out at any time with questions, concerns, or celebrations. I appreciate YOUR patience, flexibility, and positivity!
On a separate note, THANK YOU for the amazing Teacher Appreciation goodies provided for our staff! It was an incredible treat! Also, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all of our incredible moms! We hope your day was as incredible as you are! There is truly no place like Meadow Wood!
Welcome home to MWE!

Counselors Connecting with Kids!
Dear boys and girls,
We have been talking a lot about mindfulness with you lately. That is a big idea for you to understand. It’s really a big idea for lots of grown-ups to understand also. Now, more than ever, it is so important that we all practice mindfulness so that we can be thoughtful about our actions. Mindfulness helps us calm down our bodies and brains so that we can make good choices.
This is our favorite definition of mindfulness:
Mindfulness is “paying attention with kindness.”
Here are some more suggestions about how you can be mindful during your day.
- · Wash your hands, but make it mindful. You’ve heard it a million times: To fight the coronavirus, wash your hands as often as possible for at least 20 seconds. Next time you’re over the sink, start noticing how that actually feels. Maybe close your eyes and take in the sensations you’ve never paid attention to before. (Is it cold? Slippery? Has that wrinkle in your palm always been there?) Try using the time to think of five things you’re grateful for. Beats singing “Happy Birthday,” right?
- · Bubble breathing. If you have a bottle of bubbles lying around the house, this one’s for you. First, breathe in slowly, filling every inch of your lungs with air. Then, with your mouth pointed toward the bubble wand, let out a slow, steady stream of breath until a huge bubble begins to form. Focus on your breath as the bubble grows bigger. Repeat this a few times, and notice the way your body and mind feel after.
- · Connect at home. Staying away from other people is important right now to keep us all healthy, but it feels strange. If you’re missing a sense of connection, the “Fun House Mirrors” game is an option. Grab a parent or sibling, stand across from each other and choose a leader. The leader’s job is to make slow movements; the partner makes the same movements. The goal is to follow each other so closely that you’re moving totally together.
- · S.T.O.P. If you want to take it a step further, try a more traditional practice known as S.T.O.P. The “S” tells us to stop what we’re doing — pause the video game, put down your homework — and sit or lie down. Then comes “T,” which stands for taking deep breaths, in through the nose and out of the mouth. “O” is for observing what’s happening in your mind, body and emotions while continuing to breathe. There’s no right or wrong thing to feel, so just think about what you’re feeling inside. Finally, “P” asks us to proceed with our day while still thinking about how we feel about everything going on.
We miss you and hope that the tips we are sharing with you and your families are helping create more peaceful, calm homes.
Can’t wait to see you!

Spring Fundraiser Update
Due to public health concerns, we had to cancel our spring fundraiser, Bugs and Bids on the Bayou. Thank you to Melanie White, Gabby Gallerano, and Lindsey O’Conor for all of the time and effort they put forth in planning this fundraiser. A big thanks also goes out to the many families and teachers who had volunteered to host parties. The decision to cancel was not easy.
The event was scheduled for this weekend and we are all disappointed that we can’t gather to raise money for our great school. The success of the Meadow Wood PTA has always been tied to your steadfast support. Your financial gifts and countless volunteer hours are what make programs, extra field trips, playground equipment, and much more possible at our school.
We understand that circumstances have changed for many of us, however, if you had planned to contribute to our spring fundraiser and are still willing and able, we have another option for you. You may make a direct donation to our school through the Eagle Excellence Fund.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to celebrating with you on the other side of this virus. Hang in there, Meadow Wood Families, we are in this together!
From Dr. Craft:
Dear SBISD Families,
The 8th week of Digital Backpack resources are now online and ready for you! We appreciate your collaboration and engagement through these many weeks! Together, you all have accessed this resource more than 100,000 times!
Following this week, your students and teachers will enjoy opportunities to select from a “choice board” of activities for the last two weeks of the school year.
Looking forward, SBISD leaders are continuing to refine our summer plans. We will share more in the next few weeks, but we can confirm that our summer programming will continue to be delivered online. We also can share that we will not be allowing facility rentals for in-person summer programs that have been traditionally offered by other organizations on our campuses.
On behalf of all of us in SBISD, Happy Mother’s Day to all our SBISD moms! We hope you have had a wonderful day.
Have a safe and healthy week ahead.
