McKinley Monthly
June 2019
Dear Families,
Happy June! It may not be warm yet, but the year is winding down!
I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for another amazing year at McKinley. We look forward to enhancing our classrooms through the gift of funds from the adult social; we thank you for the staff room treats all year long, the birthday acknowledgments, the holiday and end of year gifts, your presence at all of the past and the upcoming events (5th Grade Completion and Field Day!). We thank you for being such wonderful examples of parent volunteerism--we truly have something special here! The students see in practice what it means to be part of a community. Most of all, thank you all for entrusting us with your children!
We still have some exciting events planned for the end of the school year. Field Day is Friday, the talent show is next week Wednesday (parents of students who are performing are welcome to attend--please check in at the office before 9:00 a.m.); and many grades have field trips planned. The last day of school for students is Thursday, June 13th, with a 5th grade completion ceremony planned to celebrate our fifth graders’ transition from elementary to middle school. We wish them well as they embark on the next step in their educational journey!
Charlotte will be in a few hours next week and a couple of days in July, and then she will be back full time the second week in August. I will have shortened hours during the summer months and have some days scheduled with off-site meetings and conferences, so the best way to reach me, Charlotte, Terri, or custodian Greg Hausinger this summer is via email:
Jean Hoffmann hoffmaje@wauwatosa.k12.wi.us.
Charlotte Garder garderch@wauwatosa.k12.wi.us
Terri Uden udente@wauwatosa.k12.wi.us
Greg Hausinger hausingr@wauwatosa.k12.wi.us
Have a safe and happy summer everyone! I hope that reading, writing, and creating are on top of everyone’s list for the break! Thank you for all of your support this year. I appreciate your partnership as we continue to provide a wonderful place where children love to go to school and learn!
Look for our July and August newsletters with reminders for summer dates and other news that might come up.
Mrs. Hoffmann

Summer Reading for Parents!
In response to our Parent Listening Sessions, some parents have asked about staff book studies and other readings. Here is a list of works to explore if you are wishing to join us on this journey. We have moved the Little Free Library from the 2nd floor to outside of the office. I have included some of these books (those I have extras of) for parents to borrow if interested.
Help for Billy by Heather T. Forbes (25 staff members signed up for this book study. The book is a “manual for parents and teachers addressing essential methods for managing the school-room behavior of the child with complex trauma”)
Waking Up White by Debbie Irving (5th grade teachers read and presented to staff on this)
Daring Greatly by Brene Brown (great book for everybody--in education or not!)
Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People by Mahzarin R. Banaji
Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching and Learning by Sharroky Hollie
White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo (This article hits upon the meaty topics covered in the book)
We Got This by Cornelius Minor
Lost at School by Ross W. Greene
Despite the Best Intentions by Amanda E. Lewis and John B. Diamond
Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain by Zaretta Hammond
Whistling Vivaldi in the Dark by Claude Steele (addresses stereotype threat)
Gym Shorts - Your Monthly Guide to McKinley Physical Education
Hello families!
We are quickly approaching the end of the school year. And that means Field Day is near. A reminder, our field day will be this Friday, June 7th. It is a great day for all the students to get outside and be active. We do a number of different stations including some using water. None of the stations are designed to get anyone soaked, but many students still find a way to make that happen. If you would like to send along a change of clothes or a towel for your student you may. This day is not possible without the help of parent volunteers. Thank you to everyone who has been able to help out this year. I know everyone’s schedules are very busy this time of year.
It has been a great year in the gym at McKinley. I’ve seen a lot of students improve in many aspects of physical education. Not only in their physical skills, but in the strategies they use during game play, and their sportsmanship during activities as well.
Once again, I would love for all of you to consider following our twitter account for daily updates on things happening inside the gym. We are McKinley PE. Twitter handle: @McKinley_PE

NEW FAMILY MENTOR PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
McKinley's New Family Mentor Program connects existing McKinley families with families new to McKinley with the goal of welcoming new families to the school as well as providing a resource for information and questions throughout the school year.
In order to make this program successful, we are in need of veteran McKinley families to volunteer to be mentor families this year. The time commitment is minimal and the impact is lasting. Please consider becoming a Mentor Family by contacting Paige Brown at brownpa@wauwatosa.k12.wi.us

Ms. Kumferman’s Korner-News from your School Social Worker
A big THANK YOU to all of the 5th grade students who worked so hard on their Academic and Career Portfolios as part of the transition to middle school. Each student created their own personal site that reflected his/her goals, strengths, challenges, career exploration, interests and questions about the future. Over the last two months, they have shared these portfolios in a presentation during a conference with a parent/other staff member, and me or Ms. Josephson (social work grad student). We have been so impressed and have learned so much more about each student!
THANK YOU to all of the parents/guardians who were able to come in to listen and share in this process. We appreciate your time and hope that you learned something new as well! We certainly understand if someone was unable to come, and your child can still share this portfolio with you at home. As long as Google exists, their portfolio exists.
Lastly, GOOD LUCK to all the 5th graders who will be leaving McKinley and starting their new adventures! Please come back and visit. My door is always open….
Resource:
2-1-1 is a great resource to have especially during the summer months! This is a community resource link for all of Milwaukee County. You can dial 2-1-1 to get access to resources related to food, shelter, child care, clothing, transportation, medical care, mental health resources, camps, and so much more.

Fiddle Jam
The Fourth Annual 5th Grade Fiddle Jam held on Monday 6/3 was a HUGE success! Thanks to all the 5th grade orchestra families who were able to come out and participate in this special event. McKinley students connected with string players from throughout the district to "jam" on their favorite fiddle tunes. A few McKinley alumni from the Whitman fiddle club even joined in the fun! The weather was perfect, and the Mayfair Collection atrium was an ideal spot to enjoy this informal concert gathering. Families in attendance generously donated food items to help families in need this summer. 43 jars of peanut butter and 35 jars of jam/jelly were collected to benefit Hunger Task Force! Art Room - End of the Year!
Dear McKinley Families,
It has been a productive year in the art room!
All that productivity has created some amazing pieces of art and it is almost time for your child’s own personal art show. Please send a bag, larger than grocery store size, for your daughter or son to take home their art.
Art will come home starting the week of 5/20.
Thank you for another wonderful year.
