Prendiville Catholic College
3 February 2017
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Our academic year at Prendiville Catholic College has begun and it was wonderful to have all students return this week.
The year has started off with very pleasing academic results for our Class of 2016 and we will continue to build our programs and culture of learning to provide the best possible learning environment for every student to excel. Our strong Year 12 results also received a boost with four students being selected to exhibit their assessed ATAR projects in the prestigious Year 12 Media Perspectives Showcase. Congratulations to Leevi Waddell, Harry Tatchley, Jess McGaw and Justice Goodrick.
We have lots of exciting new initiatives happening this year to help support our students. These include the continued development of our pathways, especially the launch of FlexED, our enterprise course and also ATAR Excel which will provide onsite tutoring and extra ATAR course programs for our students throughout the course of the year. ATAR Excel will be a wonderful service available to our students to provide them with extra preparation outside of school hours.
I hope everyone has received my community letter last week which provides an overview of the year ahead. If for some reason you have not received the Community Letter, it is available by clicking on the link below:
Principal’s Community Letter 2017
At our opening assembly this week we launched the theme of being BIG HEARTED at Prendiville Catholic College in 2017. The following short animation was used to share the theme which has been shaped by our student leaders:
Our Year 12 students have their College Ball tonight. The Ball is a wonderful way for them to start the year. It is an opportunity for the students to share something very special together, socialise in a dignified way, dress their smartest and also value the privileged position we are all in at Prendiville Catholic College where at the end of the day we do not miss out on much in life. This must never be taken for granted. I wish all the students and staff who will attend the Ball at an amazing venue in Kings Park a wonderful evening of shared company, a nice meal and dancing, all in a dignified and beautiful way. Thank you to Ms Jade Charles who works with the Student Council to organise the College Ball in a meticulous way.
Prendiville Staff
Prendiville Catholic College celebrates a talented, generous and committed group of staff. Each staff member has their own special gifts they bring to the College. Building a strong staff group with a common vision and way of being is important. Staff selection and appointment is critical and the College is blessed to always attract staff of high calibre. Staff selection, consistent standards and a professional learning program that helps form and support our staff.
In 2017 we will start our College LIFE program for staff. This program will include professional development streams for our staff under the themes of Leadership, Inclusion, Faith and Education.
I am really enthused by our first program to begin in term one which is our Aspiring Catholic Leader Program. This is a two-year program aimed to challenge staff to a deeper level of Leadership in a Catholic School. Congratulations to the following staff who will be the first cohort for the 2017/18 program are:

CODE OF CONDUCT
From January 1 2017, a Code of Conduct has been launched that applies to all staff, students, parents, guardians and volunteers who work with our students, in all Catholic Schools in Western Australia. The Code of Conduct was launched with our staff and will participate in smaller workshops over the course of the year. The way we work together and the relationships we foster will always have child safety as our prime directive.
A link to the video tutorial which gives an overview of the code of conduct is below:
I wish everyone a wonderful year and look forward to working with everyone in our community so that we can achieve our aspiration of developing young people who SERVE with pride, LEAD with confidence and INSPIRE others positively.

PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM 2017
Welcome to the 2017 Academic year at Prendiville Catholic College.
Prendiville Catholic College is launching a new and exciting Pastoral Care ‘Peer Support Program’ with the Year 7 cohort this year.
The Peer Support Program is an educational resource and has been widely incorporated into wellbeing, student welfare and pastoral care programs in schools throughout Australia over the last 30 years. The program is a peer led, preventative mental health program with the key concepts of the program being; resilience, sense of self, connectedness and sense of possibility. The program has been determined by research and is evidence based.
The Peer Support Program:
- Is a peer led, skills based, experiential learning program.
- Empowers young people to support each other and contribute positively to society.
- Provides students with a supportive learning environment in which to develop the skills, understandings, attitudes and strategies to improve their mental, social and emotional wellbeing.
- Develops key skills in resilience, assertiveness, decision making, problem solving and leadership.
- Utilises a whole school approach to support positive cultural change.
- Provides authentic leadership opportunities for Peer Leaders.
How does the Peer Support Program work?
- Two Year 10 Peer Leaders are allocated to a group of 8-10 Year 7 students within their House at the start of Term 1.
- Peer Leaders facilitate weekly sessions focused on and encouraging students to view challenges as opportunities to push the limitations they put on themselves and be open to new possibilities. It allows students to identify their strengths, achievements and support networks.
- Supervising Teachers provide support to the Peer Leaders through training, briefing, debriefing and supervision during the sessions.
Over the course of Term 1, Peer Leaders will foster positive relationships with Year 7 students. Peer Leaders will encourage connectivity, inclusion and a ‘sense of belonging’ with your child as they embark on their first term at Prendiville Catholic College.
Best wishes to everyone in our community for a wonderful 2017. I look forward to working with staff, parents and students to serve with pride, lead with confidence and inspire to impact others positively.

SCIENCE
Over the school holidays, the College Science Department had a number of building renovations completed. There was a renewal of the Science staff area and frosting of a number of windows around the laboratories with relevant words related to different areas of Science.
This has also included creating an official entrance to the Science area near S2 and the naming of the Science Department as the KEPLER SCIENCE DISCOVERY CENTRE.
The area was named after the famous astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler, who apart from other significant work, created the three laws related to the motion of the planets as they orbit the sun. Kepler was also a man of God who always related his work in astronomy to the wonder of creation and God.
Kepler’s work is so significant that NASA named a space telescope after him. This was launched in 2009 into orbit, with its mission to find Earth-like planets. The Kepler Space Telescope has literally found thousands of planets beyond our solar system. These exoplanets have included some that are very Earth-like with possible life! The discovery of these planets has been one of the major scientific discoveries of the last eight years. The name can only inspire discovery and innovation in our students.

MATHEMATICS AT PRENDIVILLE
The Mathematics Faculty would like to welcome two new teachers to our staff group for 2017: Mr Jon Barry and Mrs Antonette Fazzari. We look forward to working with them both and to the positive role they will play educating our students in the wonders of maths. Also, welcome back to Mrs Mernagh who took a semester of leave last year.
The Prendiville Class of 2016 mathematicians produced some sound results in their WACE examinations and particular congratulations goes to our Specialist class for outstanding achievement, well done. Thanks also to Ms Nguyen for her work with these students.

Additionally, any past Prendivillians with an interest in math tutoring are welcome to send through their details to kwilliamson@prendiville.wa.edu.au

SPORTS NOTICES
Welcome back to all members of the Prendiville Catholic College community for 2017. Once again there will be many opportunities for students to immerse themselves in sporting life at the College and I encourage all students to pursue these where possible. As per usual, the commencement of the new school year brings a sudden start to both our after school sports competition and our swimming season.
Coastal Associated Sport (CAS Sport)
Term 1 CAS Sport commences in Week 3 of this term. Trials will once again be held in Week 2 for students in Years 8-12. Available sports include Basketball, Cricket, Tennis, Touch Rugby and Volleyball however, please note that not all sports are available to all year groups. Students are able to register their interest using the following link (SUMMER CAS Registration). Once registered, students will be required to attend the subsequent trials in Week 2. Students in Years 10 - 12 will attend on Tuesday after school and Years 8 and 9 will attend on Wednesday. All trials will be held at the school grounds and will commence straight after school. Teams will finish between 4:30 and 5pm depending on how many students have signed up to their specific team.
Following the trials, coaches will make their team selections ready for our first game in Week 3. Please note that in some cases these initial selections will change once coaches have had a better chance to view all players. Those who originally missed out may find themselves in the team and likewise, initially selected players may not play the following week. Games will continue throughout the term with finals played in Week 10 for those teams who finish in the top 2. All important information such as fixtures, venues, coaches and much more will be available on the school's SPORTAL page.
Please note - CAS Sport is generally not available to Year 7 students in Term 1. The reason being is to give these students a chance to adjust to the demands of high school. In some cases however, Year 7 students may be allowed to play in the event of low numbers in a particular team. Year 7’s will not be able to play if it means an older student will miss out on a place in the team. Should any Year 7 students be interested in potentially playing in a Term 1 CAS team they will need to come and see me in the PE Office to discuss this possibility.
Swimming Training
Swimming training is open to all students of Prendiville. It takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning between 7:30am and 8:10am at HBF Arena. A bus leaves the front of the school at 7:10am sharp for those students who are unable to make it to the Arena themselves and will provide transport for all students back to the College in time for their morning Pastoral Care Groups. Swimming training serves numerous purposes. Firstly, it gives students an opportunity to work with specialist coaches to improve technique as well as improving their fitness in the lead up to both the Interhouse and Interschool carnivals later this term. Furthermore, it is used as an opportunity for students in a number of subjects to prove their swimming competency such as Outdoor Education and Surf Science. Students who are interested/required to attend swimming training will need to collect a permission slip from the PE Office that must be returned before they will be allowed to board the bus or participate, should they be dropped at the Arena.
Sporting Excellence
Prendiville has a rich history of sporting achievement and has produced some outstanding athletes. These include stars such as Brownlow medalist Matt Priddis, Australian cricketers Mike and David Hussey and current Women’s Perth Scorcher Heather Graham and Socceroo Adam Taggert. Amongst our current students we have many high level achievers at State, National and International level. Should your son/daughter excel in their chosen sporting field, please notify me so they may be recognised appropriately.
Once again I am looking forward to the year ahead and being able to provide the opportunity to our students to grow and develop through their sporting endeavours.

Sports Coordinator

EVENTS 2017
We hope that you have had a great break and are recharged for the year ahead. We have 2 events this term – the Year 7 Night on the Green (see below) and the Easter Raffle (more information will be in the newsletter closer to the date of this event).
YEAR 7 NIGHT ON THE GREEN
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our Year 7 students and their families to Prendiville Catholic College. In 2015 we had our inaugural Year 7 Night on the Green. The evening was held as a direct result of new parents expressing a need to get to know other parents in the College. Opportunities to meet the parents of your child’s new peers arise far more easily in a primary school than they do in high school. As we are all keenly aware, the friends your children make in high school will share the journey from childhood to adulthood over the next 6 years. As a College we would like to provide the opportunity, for you to come along to a great social evening and get to know the PCC College Community.
The evening will consist of some fun events, the chance for your children to introduce you to their school, to meet the 2017 Student Leadership Team, some of our very special staff and myself. It is in this spirit of shared journeys, community and having some fun I would like to extend an invitation to your family to attend Prendiville Catholic College Year 7 Night on the Green.
Could you please RSVP to Denny Piovesan by FRIDAY 17 FEBRUARY 2017 so we can accommodate numbers.

When times are tough, one of the first things to be sliced from the budget is marketing. But without marketing how do you get your message out there? There is a way… and it’s free! Traditional forms of media are under-utilised communication platforms. At our interactive workshop we will show you how to claim thousands of dollars in free publicity – it is not complicated, difficult or expensive.
· Why Approach Traditional Media Outlets?
· Why You? (Why not?)
· Where Do I Start?
· Getting the Message Out There – from Press Release to Publication
Workshop 2 1.30 - 4.30 Crafting the Press Release – from Idea to Final Draft
You’ve identified your story and are ready to share it with the world – but you’re not a writer! Don’t panic! This 3 hour, hands-on workshop will baby-step you through the writing process to overcome procrastination, put pen to paper and get your message out there.
· Breaking down the skeleton – what goes in a press release anyway?
· Getting your head in the writing space (it’s easier than you think!)
· Mind your language – find your voice to sell your story
· Hone it til you own it – tightening your writing to attract a reporter’s eye
What’s the cost?
$90 + GST per participant per workshop $160 + GST for both workshops
