Only a hippopotamus will do...
Happy Friday!
Mr. Shipley defeated me in a Coke tasting contest at Town Hall Meeting this morning. A variety of fountain drinks, bottles, Mexican, and canned versions were available. Mr. Shipley is a self-proclaimed Coke connoisseur, so I'm not sure his 1 out of 5 correct is a huge victory over my 0-5, but a win is a win. Ultimately, I am not sure anyone wins by drinking that much soda before 9 a.m.
It did take me back to one of my favorite childhood memories of the holiday season that I still hang on to. Growing up, we always set out a mini-bottle of Coke and sugar cookies for the big guy in red. In my opinion, Coke still tastes better out of the bottle, and this is the only time of the year that I buy them. Similarly, a sugar cookie is not complete without a hefty helping of icing and a plethora of sprinkles. For the record, I prefer the very tiny sprinkles or silver beads over what you would put on ice cream. In my opinion, a great sugar cookie has lots of toppings, a generous amount of icing, and very little plain cookie. Every year, I make a mess of the kitchen putting these together. Michelle would prefer plain cookies, and that is her loss. :) Calvin and I are happy to finish the entire batch.
There is something about a mini-Coke, sugar cookies, and, more recently, holiday music that brings joy to my heart. I've never been a big fan of Christmas music, but that all changed when a four-year-old started singing and dancing to Gayla Peevey's "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" in our living room a couple of weeks ago. Do you have a family tradition? If not, you can always start one. For us, I plan to hang on to mini-Coke bottles, sugar cookies, and maybe, just maybe, a family dance party to Gayla Peevey's classic. Only a hippopotamus will do...
- I am very proud of our sixth-grade students for paying it forward with their poetry project. They could have collected donations for their Chicago Trip, but instead chose to share any money collected with other students that have lunch accounts in the red. We had a parent cover the cost of our students, and this was an excellent opportunity for our students to learn more about the needs of others and make a difference. We were able to write two schools each a check for over $100.
- I've included photos in the newsletter from the 5th-grade Career Fair Project. Students completed their internship at various businesses this past week.
- Congratulations to both basketball teams as they defeated CSA Fodrea on Wednesday. The EBL Super Saturday Tournament Bracket has been released, and I've included it in this newsletter.
- Mr. Shipley escorted sixth-grade students on a limo ride and pizza lunch. As a fundraiser for the Chicago Trip, students could sell discount cards. If you sold a certain amount, this was the prize. Photos are included in this newsletter.
- I feel like I've talked a lot about sixth-grade in this newsletter, but the background photo is from Miss Cook's math class. I'm always impressed with the high level of learning taking place in our classes, and even though Christmas Break is just around the corner, the students and teachers have continued to push forward this week with getting better. Their relentless pursuit of excellence is what sets them apart from the rest.
Have a great weekend,
Brett
