Amana 5th grade Newsletter
Ms. Hess and Mrs. Baxter
Class News 1 - 22 - 2016
What a busy short week we had! This week we finalized our explorer presentations for social studies as well as built food webs and worm habitats. Students are learning what plants and animals need to survive as well as the energy needed for all things starts with the sun!
If you have not set up your spring PLP time, please email your student's teacher. The results of the assessments taken will be shared at our spring PLPs March 1, 2, and 3.
If your child has been involved with Coding Club, please note that it is suspended in order to allow all kids access to the engaging robots, Dot and Dash. Fifth graders will meet during part of recess in the spring for three week sessions.
Learning Goals:
Social Studies: I can gather information and inform others about an early explorer to the New World and present it.
Writing: I can compile my notes about a topic and create a Google presentation. I can write words using the bossy "r" and know if the "r" is an "or" or "er".
Reading: I can identify the author's purpose by examining text evidence. I can read nonfiction and be able to summarize the text in one sentence.
Important Dates:
Friday 2/12/16 - Valentine's Day party in the afternoon
Saturday 2/27/16 - Family Fun Night
Tuesday 3/15/16 - Band Concert
Tuesday 3/22/16 - Spring Cowboy theme Music Concert
March---Art and Science Fair
April---trip to the Capitol and Historical Museum
5/17/16 - Monster Band Concert
Family Fun Night Baskets
This year we are putting together 2 gift baskets to raffle off at the Family Fun Night. We are in charge of bringing items to put in the baskets.
Here are the themes of each class:
Ms. Hess: Nerf & Candy Craze
Mrs. Baxter: Movie Night & First Aide
We would love for each student to bring in one item for each basket for the teacher by Friday, February 19th. This will enable us to make room for all items in the basket before closing them up.
~Thanks in advance for making this event a success!~
IT IS WINTER...
Snow boots and Snowpants are not required by all, only those who would like to play in the snow during recess.
Please take a couple of minutes to have conversations with your student about winter safety.
Some examples:
· Staying off of all ponds, streams, lakes and rivers unless you are with an adult and know for sure that the ice is at least 6 inches thick.
· If you are playing outside make sure you have boots, snow pants, coat, cap and gloves on.
· Always let your parents know if you are playing at a friend’s house.
· Have a back-up plan in case you go home and you cannot get into your house after school.
- Go to a neighbor’s house or a friend’s house. Make sure to call your parents when you get there.
