Five national winners will be chosen. Each winning submission will receive a $200 cash prize and $50 worth of summer reading materials for their library.

A favorite hobby:
I have several favorite hobbies but I have to say my absolute all-time favorite is reading. I just have to see what happens next! And I love to know what other people are reading so we can talk about books, too. I loved reading to children in my elementary school library days. We shared enthusiasm for books, authors and reading aloud. Fiddling, knitting and gardening round out my hobby life. In the last few years, I have played with lots of musicians in the Albany area, in North Adams and in Vermont. I really miss getting together with my musical pals.
What book would you recommend:
I just started reading “My Life as a Potato” by Arianne Costner. (Thanks, Stacey!) It’s a middle grade tale about a new kid in a school where everyone loves potatoes except him. Guess where the school is? I also just finished “ In Waves” by AJ Dungo which is a history of surfing, a history of a relationship and a tale of loss. I liked it but you may need to have tissues handy. I just finished “Guts” by Raina Telgemeier, an autobiographical middle grade graphic novel that shows the angst-ridden nature of those years, along with kids in therapy. The main character does develop in a good way over the course of the book. She comes to see her archnemesis as a whole person with problems of her own. I liked this book because it normalizes talk therapy for kids.
Share something that you are proud of that has recently happened in your library/school:
I am proud of the way my school came together to distribute food and materials to students. I am proud of the way the teachers jumped into an online presence with very little preparation time. When I talk to students, they all say they have lots to do. When I talk to parents, they are grateful for the attention and dedication shown by the teachers. And they are ready for the kids to go back to school. I think the community may have a greater appreciation of classroom teachers since the school building was closed.
What drew you to a career in school librarianship:
I have always loved books, reading, learning new things and learning how to do things. I began to see the library as a perfect fit for me when I worked in a one-person public library. I could learn every day and have tons of books to read! I realized I was teaching people how to use the library every day and I thought I could reach more children as a school librarian. I finished my college undergrad degree in education and graduate degree in Library Science. Over the years I have worked in libraries, I have combined many of my outside interests with my teaching: I use crafting, drawing, playing music, writing poetry, writing song parodies to enrich and extend the books I read with children. My career now tends more toward teaching research and critical thinking skills but I have to say: it’s all good. What could be better?
