What is SAMR
and why does it matter?
SAMR in 120 Seconds
Substitution
Teachers or students are only using new technology tools to replace old ones - different tools, same task
Examples:
- Using YouTube to have a book read aloud to students
- Students using Google Docs to type an assignment (instead of writing it on paper)
Augmentation
Technology is a direct substitute, but there is functional improvement over what you did without the technology.
Example:
- Using a video camera app students could complete a fluency bootcamp, where they would record themselves reading a passage, and play it back checking for fluency and expression.
- Carol - note taking with 4th graders using Pages
Modification
This is where the magic starts to happen.
Technology is being used more effectively not to do the same task using different tools but to redesign new parts of the task and transform students learning.
Example:
- Using the commenting service in Google Docs, for instance, to collaborate and share feedback on a given task task.
- Create a digital travel brochure that incorporates multimedia and student created video.
- Students could use iMovie App to create iMovie Book Trailers, or digital stories using the Videolicious app
Redefinition
Students are researching, sharing, collaborating, and connecting with not only their classrooms but with classrooms around the world. They are generating questions, and exploring topics and content using current technologies available to them.
Examples:
- Virtual Field Trips to visit the Louvre or Mount Saint Helens
- Connecting with Lois Lowry or students in Tanzania through Google Connected Classrooms
- Students could use iBook Author or Storybook Maker to create their own digital books
Now What?
Grab your lesson plans and pair with a teacher in the room from a different grade level. Take 10 minutes to review each other's plans and decide how to add some meaningful technology into your teaching next week. We will regroup at the end for you to share how you decided to add technology and what level you have reached on the SAMR model.
Here's a great resource to get you started in you're feeling stuck.
Feeling Adventurous?
Try out this awesome resource Plickers - it allows immediate feedback for YOU and can be used in a single iPad classroom :). I will be implementing this system in February to cut down on my grading!
