Message from the Principal
Dear Parents/Guardians
Reading to and with our Children
With Book Week coming up, we are reminded about the incredible importance of books and reading to the lives of children. We know that through reading, our children are exposed to a wide range of words that build their vocabulary and as they learn to listen, they improve their understandings of what is happening. Importantly, books also spark our children’s imagination, stimulate their curiosity and help in brain development. The Australian Children’s Book Week theme of ‘Find Your Treasure’ next week is the perfect opportunity to hunt out the next great treasure to read for both young and old. Good luck and happy reading!
Bishop’s Literacy Testing
Well done to our students in Years 3 & 5 who have completed the Bishop’s Literacy Assessments over the last two weeks. This curriculum based assessment reflects and supports the progressive nature of Religious Education Units and focuses on students’ knowledge and understandings of RE. Like NAPLAN testing, it is a snapshot of student performance.
Assumption Mass
It was great to celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mass this morning with our students and parishioners. I must say it was a beautiful mass with our children really excelling in behaviour, singing and engagement. Certainly, a lovely celebration.
40th Anniversary and Blessing of Whitford Catholic Primary School
Don’t forget that we have set the date to bless our new school buildings and celebrate our 40th Anniversary during a school mass on 5th September at 11am, beginning in the church. Please pop this date in your diary as we’d love our families to be part of this celebration.
Front Carpark
Congratulations to all the families and children who are using the carpark cross-walk in front of the administration building in the mornings and afternoons correctly. By following the designated red brick pathways and new cross-walks, you are displaying to your child, and the wider school community, how to be safe and responsible in our new carpark. Thank you for your continued support.
P & F Meeting
Our P & F are meeting tonight (Wednesday 15th of August) at 7:30pm and we extend a warm welcome to anyone in our community who is interested in coming along. This evening will be a particularly informative meeting to attend as we have a member from the Parents and Friends Federation of Western Australia (PFFWA) attending and addressing those in attendance. Thanks in advance for your support.
Many blessings

Library News
History News: Year Two students enjoyed a great session at Cockman House last week. St Joseph was kind with the rain holding off and they got to explore this excellent historical site just off Ocean Reef Road in Woodvale.
It impressed them to see how Mary Ann and James Cockman managed with their seven children in such a tiny cottage. The outside dunny was a highlight and the thought of “top and tailing” with your siblings made many of them grateful for our modern conveniences. But it seems they were most concerned about the once-a-week bath that saw the eldest go first and the same bathwater used for everyone else. Many of the youngest were glad they live in 2018!
Book Week Play: This Friday, 17th August, all of the children from Pre Primary to Year 6 will attend the Book Week Play, Treasure Hunt, which is an interactive and educational in-school performance that explores the issues of sustainability and our relationship with the natural environment as well as celebrating how books & reading can create understanding and bring people of different backgrounds together. On Friday the Children’s Book Council of Australia will announce the Book of the Year Awards and Book Week will officially start.
Book Week Parade: Find Your Treasure: Book Week is nearly here! The dress-up parade will be next Friday 24th August, starting at 8.45 am in the gym, so start thinking of those book characters that have helped you “treasure” The short-list for 2018 can be viewed at https://cbca.org.au/short-list-2018
I encourage children to save football team clothes for “Show Your Colours” day at the end of the term.
Year Six Book Week Activities: Year Sixes will be very busy for Book Week with Year 6 Kids of Mercy going to Mercyville on the Friday of Book Week. They have been studying Mem Fox’s tips on “How to Read Aloud” and they are going to read their favourite picture book to the ladies. Year Sixes will also read to the Kindy kids on the Wednesday at 11.00 and 11.55 am and Thursday at lunch time. All Year Sixes will be available to read to junior primary during lunchtimes in the library and the Pre-primary playground in Book Week.
