Counselor's Corner
“Grief is in two parts. The first is loss. The second is the remaking of life.”
-Anne Roiphe
I’ve wrestled within myself for the past few days about what to write for this week’s Counselor’s Corner. Part of me has felt the need to do more to honor Noah, while other parts have thought about the need to move forward and turn some attention to other aspects of what still faces each of us. This internal challenge has been reflected in many of the conversations I’ve had with many of you this week. And, it is what has helped me to focus on what I need to share with you today.
Grief is a strange experience. As the quote above says, there are two very distinct parts. The first is the loss we experienced. For some of us that loss was minimal in our daily experience while others were significantly impacted. As a result, the pain and the grief are very different for each person reading these words. Adults are often more capable of recognizing these differences and adjusting accordingly. Students don’t have the breadth of experience with death and therefore have difficulty accepting why some are more affected than others. In many cases we find ourselves either expecting everyone to feel the same way we do or we expect them to move on faster than they are prepared to do. It is a strange place indeed. Some of you reading this are still deep in your grief while others are ready for the second part. Both are normal and ok. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves of that.
Remaking life is often more challenging than grieving. There really are no guidelines for how to do this. My own experiences tell me that we just do what seems natural each day and slowly life adjusts itself and us. This is true in many cases but not always. The one piece of counsel that I could offer is this; if you begin to recognize that you are not adjusting at all and the pain is not easing over time, then seek help. This is where counselors are essential. Grief counselors specialize in helping when a little more is needed than just making it through on your own.
As we navigate forward, we want to continue to be mindful of those who are still grieving. We want to respect and honor. To that end, I want to share a couple of events that will help and invite you to participate as you feel you can.
On Thursday, April 18, we will remember Noah in a couple of ways. Noah’s birthday is April 18 and the Spirit Wall will be painted by his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Nisbet will be on campus with us that day for High School Early and Late Lunch. We will have a space reserved for those who would like to eat with them that day. Also, we will have Hat Day on Thursday. Students can pay $1 and wear a baseball hat in Noah’s memory. The funds will be collected by the Leadership Class and will be donated to the Live Like Noah campaign.
Remember that grief affects all of us in different ways and we each respond to it according to our relationships and our unique personality. If you need someone to talk to about grief, I am available to you.
Never forget the truth of these words: Each of you matter to me!

Morning Drop-off Changes
In an attempt to make morning drop-off run more efficiently, we are asking our families to make sure they are doing the following:
- Do not pull into the crosswalk to drop off your student. This is where students who park in the back lot cross over, so please stop just short of this.
- Encourage your student to lead a healthy lifestyle by getting in a few extra steps. Do not wait until you get to the front of the line to drop off your student. Your child should exit as soon as you clear the cones by the gym and come to a stop.
- If you have a student driver, please pull to the middle school side to change places as this can slow down the main line of traffic.
- If a staff member is directing traffic at the crosswalk, do not motion to a student to cross. Let the staff member on duty do this.
- Please make sure your student has all their belongings and is ready to exit the vehicle as soon as you come to a stop in the drop-off zone.
- Please proceed to exit the campus after you have dropped off your student. Do not pull into one of the staff/student lots to make a phone call, etc. We have young drivers, students walking, and limited parking.
Your cooperation with this is appreciated.
Afternoon Pick-up Changes
In an attempt to speed up afternoon pick-up, parents who are picking up high schoolers only may use either the Middle School or High School sides after 3:00 p.m. High School students whose ride is on the Middle School side must cross at the crosswalk and not in the middle of the lot. Parents who are picking up middle schoolers only, should continue to pick up on the Middle School side, and parents who are picking up middle and high schoolers should continue to pick up on the High School side. Please make sure you pull into the pick-up lane and do not block the exit lane. We will have staff members out there to assist as we transition to this new policy.
