PRINCIPAL AND VICE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
At our last assembly, the student body focused on being kind. There is much evidence of kindness being shared everywhere at Bonny Slope. As we walk down the hallways, we see students offering to help others carrying a big load or holding the hands of younger students as they navigate a busy hallway before school. We see students jump up to help clean a mess in the cafeteria, write kind notes to others, hold doors for staff and peers. When students need to learn how to be more kind, staff meet with students and have restorative and learning conversations. Bonny Slope is a great place to learn and we feel fortunate to be a part of such an amazing community. The PYP attribute of caring is certainly a strength of our students at Bonny Slope!
Next Monday, we do not have school. Teachers will be working on report cards for the first semester. Below is a quote from a colleague written to explain how our report card grades may not be the same kind of grades many of us had when going to school:
Beaverton School District uses a proficiency scale model to score elementary students, which provides a number grade from 1 to 4. Typically, since proficiency is based on end-of-year targets, we see more 2 scores this first semester. That doesn’t mean that your child is significantly behind, but rather it is much too soon to determine mastery based on that end-of-year target. If there is a concern within one content area, your child’s teacher should inform you of that during your conference. As the year progresses and targets have been met, students should receive grades that reflect their end goal proficiency. Please be mindful that a 3 equals proficiency. Proficiency means that the child has successfully mastered the content standard according the Common Core State Standards rubrics. Many parents will anticipate a 4 as the end score, but a 4 is only provided if that students performs extraordinarily above and beyond the standard requirement; hence, 4 grades should not be confused with an end-of-year target grade of 3.
Next Wednesday, at 7:00PM in the library, the Bonny Slope Community Organization (BSCO) will host one of three community meetings. This is a great time to learn more about how the parent organization is enriching our students’ experiences at BSE as well as learn more about future school events. Before the meeting, parents have the opportunity to have a casual conversation with both Janet Maza and Jim Hiller during the Principal Chat. We hope you can make it to one or both of these events!
Sincerely,
Janet Maza and Jim Hiller

Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way
Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home, schools, workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.
Follow these five steps every time.
1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
Sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands in many situations. However,
· Sanitizers do not get rid of all types of germs.
· Hand sanitizers may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.
· Hand sanitizers might not remove harmful chemicals from hands like pesticides and heavy metals.
Caution! Swallowing alcohol-based hand sanitizers can cause alcohol poisoning if more than a couple of mouthfuls are swallowed. Keep it out of reach of young children and supervise their use.
How to use hand sanitizer
· Apply the gel product to the palm of one hand (read the label to learn the correct amount).
· Rub your hands together.
· Rub the gel over all the surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. This should take around 20 seconds.
Wash your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs:
*Before, during, and after preparing food
*Before eating food
*Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea
*Before and after treating a cut or wound
*After using the toilet or after changing diapers or helping a child use the toilet
*After blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing
*After handling pets, pet food or pet waste
