Toro Times Week 28
March 25, 2023
This week starts with an "ODD" day schedule.
Book Fair - March 27-31
Parent Emails
Please email both of us when you have a parent comment or concern. This allows us both to be informed. It also helps when one of us is off campus because it allows the present principal to act in a timely manner.

Anchored 4 Life
The club provides opportunities for peers to enhance social skills, learn leadership skills, build character, improve self-esteem, and integrate into their community. Youth will learn these change and resiliency skills using the Club features.
No Place for Hate
Our committee met last week to identify biases on campus that they wish to address. The next meeting will take place on April 13th during lunch.
Makerspace Wednesday - Cancelled
Due to the Book Fair, there will be no Maker Space Wednesday this week. We will be back with more fun after Spring Break!
Cell Phone Policy
Our preteens and teenage students live in a digital age very different from when we all were in middle school. They have the ability to connect 24/7 with anyone, anywhere. That is a tremendous amount of pressure for our students to face as they are navigating the challenges of adolescence. We are teaching our students to be good digital citizens through our curriculum. At the same time, many are testing the boundaries as we might expect with students of this age.
With an increase in poor decisions made by students using cell phones, we will be adjusting our cell phone rules at the return of spring break. This will include “no cell phone zones” at all schools and other structures to support positive digital citizenship during class time and unstructured time. The new plans are still in development at each site and will be communicated to you by your principals before the spring break.
We thank you for taking the time to review the new procedures with your middle schooler and ask them questions about the cell phone expectations talks/assemblies that we will host after the break.
The following was shared with MV students at our expectations assembly last week, and the full plan will be shared before break:
Phones are a privilege. While you are allowed to use them during non-instructional minutes, that privilege is tied to following campus expectations of phone use.
Off and put away during instructional minutes. That means you should not have them out on your way to the office or restroom during class time.
Prohibited in the locker rooms and restrooms.
Campus supervisors will be stationed at the restrooms to ensure there are no more than three people in them at a time. Additionally, students will check in their phones with the campus supervisors while going to the restroom. Those caught with a phone in the restroom or locker room will automatically jump to the consequence of having your phone confiscated, brought to the office, and the need for a parent/guardian to pick it up.
Be respectful. Be responsible. Be safe.

Attendance
We know that our children get sick, and there are many bugs floating around. We are not encouraging you to bring your child in ill. However, if they are fever free and just have the sniffles, you can give them a COVID Test and send it to Maribel Naranjo so they can come to school.
When we look at our attendance, we are seeing a large number of students out for trips, or day excursions. Please remember that all the make-up work in the world does not replace the experiences and live instruction they receive in the classroom. In addition, these absences are unexcused.
Please consider modeling for your child the importance of good work ethic by asking them to show up for their "job" each and every day on time. Our children are learning by watching us make decisions, and these are life-long lessons.
We look forward to seeing your child every day!
PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY AND CAUTIOUSLY!
Neighbors have called to report fast driving, and people pulling out without looking, almost hitting pedestrians. Students have been reported to cross outside of crosswalks in the neighborhood.
Please remind your students of safe practices and respect to neighbors and their property.
We also have reports of students being unsafe in the intersection behind the school (Carmen Dr.) Instead of using the crosswalk, some cut diagonally through the intersection and do not listen to the crossing guard. Please remind them to be patient and use the crosswalks for safety purposes.
Thank you!

Student Reminders
Report!
We want students to use their voice to stand up for themselves. It doesn't mean they need to confront the person, but they need to let staff know. We do not tell students who reported it.
Ways to report:
- If it is happening in the classroom, let the teacher know by speaking to them in private, or emailing them.
- Come to the office to fill out an incident report.
- Email admin and they will call you in to discuss the situation.
If your child comes to you and reports something, and they do not want to come to us, please contact us and let us know so we can follow up.
