Mao Zedong
Mao was a Chinese communist leader and founder of the people's Republic of China. He was responsible for the disastrous policies of the "Great Leap Forward" and the "Cultural Revolution." The Great Leap Forward was a program to create agriculture and industry. And the Cultural Revolution was created for Mao's attempts to reassert his beliefs in China.
The Cultural Revolution caused China's economy to collapse. It also led many citizens to lose their possessions. More citizens became peasants. Throughout the years, many people were left in poverty. And the communist party increased control over citizens by repressing pro-democracy demands, censoring the media and information and repressing freedom of speeches.
The Long March
The Long March marked the emergence of Mao Zedong (1893-1976) as the undisputed leader of the Chinese Communists. The Long March was that when the Chinese Communists broke through enemy lines and began an epic flight from their encircled headquarters in Southwest China.
The Long March inspired many young Chinese to join the Chinese Communist party. The Long March established Mao's leadership of the Chinese Communist party. The Communists grew in strength and eventually defeated the Nationalists in the struggle to control mainland China.
The establishment of the people's Republic of China in 1949
When after a near complete victory by the Chinese Communist party in the Chinese Civil War, Mao Zedong proclaimed the people's Republic of China from atop Tiananmen.
By 1950, international recognition of the Communist government had increased considerably, but it slowed by China's involvement in the Korean War. On October 1950, sensing a threat to the industrial heartland in northeast China from the advancing UN forces.
Tiananmen Square
It is a large plaza in Central Beijing China. In June 4th, a massacre as troops with assault rifles and tanks killed unarmed civilians trying to block the military's advance towards Tiananmen Square. And in 1989, a man called Tank Man stood in front of a column of tanks.
Protestors and rioters barricading the PLA troops and nearby innocent civilians shot by PLA on multiple sites on Beijing and around Tiananmen Square, hundreds to thousands killed. And market reforms delayed.
