Aiming to Keep You Informed
March 15, 2019
From the Office
Tonight is the Spring Bash from 6-8pm. Student Council will be offering a variety of games, including Jumbo versions of popular games, and our fabulous PTO will be providing treats for the students. We hope to see a great student turn-out!
Innovation Projects
Students have been hard at work exploring their ideas for Innovation Night, which will be held on Thursday, May 16th. Next Friday, March 22, students will be provided time to meet with their advisor as they continue their work. Some students are at early stages of the process, while other students may be far along in their preparation for sharing their learning at Innovation Night. We encourage parents and relatives to check in with students over the break to see how they are progressing. While this is a student-led project, students are encouraged to use resources available to them to assist with their projects.
The Innovation Project allows for student choice, problem-solving, collaboration, and the presentation of their learning. We are very excited to see what students have to share on May 16th, but more importantly we look forward to hearing from them about what they learned along the way as they reflect on their experience!
Looking ahead... Wednesday, March 20th is a School improvement Day with dismissal for students at 1:40pm...Thursday, March 21st is our 2nd Trimester Honor Roll Recognition from 7:40 - 8:10am... Friday, March 22nd is our next Innovation Project work day for students....March 25th - March 29th is Spring Break.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Principal

Upcoming Student Testing
After Spring Break, students will complete the new Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) testing. IAR is state mandated and replaces the PARCC test. Please read this IAR Parent Letter or visit https://www.isbe.net/iar for more information regarding the Illinois Assessment of Readiness. At Westfield, students will complete testing the week of April 8 - 12th, with make-up testing the following week.
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness will be used to measure the growth of each student as compared to students around the state. We believe that our students should approach this type of testing with confidence and view it as an opportunity to demonstrate how much they have grown this year and how prepared they are to move to the next level.
A Message to Parents from Your Student's PE/Health Teacher
Dear Parents/Guardians-
Your child/children will be involved in an outside of school project for their PE class. The project is called “Healthy Food TV Show” where they will make a video that shows how to prepare and make a healthy food dish (ex: fruit smoothie, chicken kabobs, cauliflower pizza, etc). They can do this project individually or with a group of up to 5 students. We told the students that it is highly recommended to have adult supervision when they are preparing/making their food for their safety and the safety of the home. Please have a conversation with your child/children: when they plan on doing this, what they are making and who will be supervising (if needed). This project is due on Friday, April 12th, so they have plenty of time to prepare for this. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s PE teacher.
Sincerely,
Westfield PE Department
PLEASE NOTE: CALENDAR CHANGES
- Monday, April 22nd will be an Institute day (no student attendance)
- Friday, May 24th will be a student attendance day. (previously listed as a teacher work day)

A Note about Student Illness from the Nurse
Dear Parents,
Bloomingdale SD 13 has been experiencing a relatively high number of absences over the past couple of days. The symptoms are not consistent with one specific illness. We ask parents to monitor the health of their students and keep students at home if they appear sick. Here are some general health guidelines to follow:
Students should be kept at home when:
1. He/she has a fever of 100.0℉ or greater ─ your child may return to school after being fever-free for a full 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication.
2. He/she is vomiting or has diarrhea ─ your child may return to school if there is no vomiting or diarrhea for a full 24 hours.
3. He/she has a persistent sore throat or a hacking cough ─ your child may return to school after been seen by a physician for evaluation and has begun any necessary treatment.
4. He/she has generalized body aches, fatigue, and appears pale in color ─ your child may return to school when rested and feeling stronger.
Thank you!
Nurse Jones
