Fabulous 5th Grade

What's Happening in 5th Grade This Week?
Reading- This week they read a piece from the book Wayside School is Falling Down. It's a funny section of a class receiving a package, which is a computer! The teacher ends up throwing it out the window (they're on the 30th floor) to teach the students about gravity! There are some definite funny parts in this story like Louis is climbing the stairs in the 18th story and goes right to the 20th story because there is no 19th story. In grammar they are working on complete sentences and fragments. They have a spelling list. The posttest will be on Friday. Some have a highlighted list based on their pretest. I will eventually give them the bonus list. I give it to people based on their pretest scores, so I usually wait a few weeks before I assign them. Once they are doing bonus they will do it for the rest of the year.
Spelling- On the worksheets I get really picky! They are required to write in cursive in everything for me, except math. This is in place of doing handwriting. I mark things wrong if their "N" has too many humps. It's wrong it their T isn't crossed. If their U's and W's are mixed up, I count those wrong too.
Math- Okay we are in our new series. The first lesson was teaching them about exponents in multiplication! They really only deal with them and the base number being 10. We do some work together in partners and some together as a whole class. They are also going to be learning to write numbers in standard, expanded , and written form (number name) The expanded form can be done two ways and one of them is with exponents. I am teaching both, but will let them decide which one they like better to use. Neither is wrong. We will also be working on learning about the thousandths in decimals!
Religion- We started our chapter which always revolves around the creation story. This chapter also focuses on the Blessed Trinity. They have a little activity that goes with that! I always find that a fun one to see what they come up with! I will post pictures on Facebook when we do get to it. Father Adam did train the Catholic students on becoming servers on Wednesday. It was good to see so many in the chapel!
As you can see I am trying a new Blog out! Our current Blogger seems to be changing some things and I don't like those changes. I am still learning how to maneuver this one!
I hope everyone has a great weekend! It's a 3 day weekend, so it has to be GREAT! I don't have any big plans yet, but I am sure I will enjoy the extra day!
God Bless,
Miss Surma
