Reading Workshop
Literacy Goals
- Phonics - Long and soft sounds for c and g
The long vowel sounds /a/ and /i/ are often spelled as a single vowel followed by
consonant -e.
- Reading Fluency - reading with phrasing using punctuation
- Comprehension - Understanding Characters using a Venn Diagram to compare contrast
- Writing - Types of sentences; statements and questions
- Vocabulary - Multiple Meaning Words
Our class will begin our Guided Reading groups this week. Students will meet in small groups to develop their reading strategies. These lessons with focus on comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and vocabulary. Your child will be encouraged to take their books and read at home. These books may be used for their Reading Response homework.
Writing Workshop
The class will learn and practice the size and formation of the vowels. Each vowel is short and the students will be reminded to write them between the double lines. The students will also build writing fluency by writing words that rhyme. By hearing rhymes and recognizing the size and placement of each letter the students will try to write them smoothly. The three ending punctuation marks; period, question mark, and exclamation mark with be modeled and practiced. For each lesson, the students will be reminded to "bump the lines."
We will continue learning using the Narrative Writing Diagrams. The students will learn all about building suspense to create kinds of "Wonder" to propel the reader into the story. The students will work together to define and identify when suspense is used in the books they read. We will then ask specific questions to help us determine the "clues" we can add to help slowly unfold an exciting discovery. The next technique the students will be introduced to is using Word Referents; words that take the place for other words. Finally, they will try the technique of the magic of three. They will learn how giving a reader three hints will allow them to lead the reader to a discovery or revelation.
Once they have listed and practiced each of "Building Suspense" strategies, they will begin writing a new personal narrative using an entertaining beginning, and using details to describe a character or setting, and to build suspense to lead to the main event.

Science & Social Studies
We are enjoying the excitement of Life Science in 2R! The students have been learning why sunlight is another key necessity for plants. Understanding how plants respond to sunlight, each student has built a creative Grass Head which will allow them to observe how plants grow toward sunlight.
The last two Mysteries; "Should You Water A Cactus?" and "Where Do Plants Grow Best?" will be completed next. The students will learn that various plants have different needs based on their habitat. They will see and learn about plant characteristics that affect its needs.
We will complete our the first Science Unit by playing a game called "Plant Survivor." The students will choose a plant card and then decide where best to plant, such as: shady forest, dry hillside, lawn, sunny yard with a leaky faucet, vegetable garden, or inside a house. The students will make their choice and see how their chosen environment either fostered or hindered growth for their plant. Finally, using all of the information learned from our lessons and investigations, the students will complete the task a review of the main ideas.
On October 24th, we will be ready to move into our first Social Studies chapter. It begins with an introduction to reading nonfiction text. Using the class big book, they will begin to learn that it is important to know how to locate the Main Idea.
