THE BOOK OF EPHESIANS, A CHALLENGE
Remember what the Shema is? The Shema is the central prayer in the Jewish prayerbook (Siddur) and is often the first section of Scripture a Jewish Child learns. During its recitation in the synagogue, Orthodox Jews pronounce each word very carefully and cover their eyes with their right hand. Many Jews recite the Shema at least twice daily: once in the morning and once in the evening. It consists of 3 Scriptural passages, (Deut. 6:4-9), 11:13-21, and Numbers 15:37-41.
.
Parts of the Shema are written on a small scroll which is then placed in a mezuzah. The mezuzah is an oblong or rectangular type box placed on the outside and inside door posts of their homes.
.
What does the Shema say? The part that we looked at comes from Deuteronomy 6:4-9. "Hear, oh Israel, the Lord our God is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. Tie them as symbols on your hands, and bind them on your foreheads. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."
.
How would our relationship with God be affected if we took the time to repeat this prayer a few times every day? I'd like to challenge/encourage everyone to keep the words of Deuteronomy 6:4-9 handy and recite them in the morning and the evening. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul, and all your strength. A great way to start your day, get through the day, and end your day.
.
I hope you'll accept my challenge,
Jimmy
